No. 2 Madison Central falls 28-23 at No. 4 Tupelo: Madison led 20-7 at the half, and a couple of second half TDs gave Tupelo a 21-20 lead. Madison drove and kicked a late field goal to retake the lead, but Tupelo completed a long pass to get into FG territory. Madison came up with a big play to knock them back into a 3rd and 25 situation, and Tupelo completed a prayer to score a late TD. Tupelo got an unsportsmanlike penalty to force the kickoff back 15 yards, but Madison fumbled the ensuing kickoff to end the game.

No. 7 Starkville 42, No. 13 Germantown 0

No. 17 Clinton had the bye in Region 2 (No. 25 Murrah is independent)

Tupelo and Starkville are 1-0 in Region Play
Germantown and Madison are 0-1
Clinton is 0-0

In Region 3 ...
No. 1 Brandon has no problem at No. 23 Petal, winning 45-10.

No. 18 Northwest Rankin defeats Pearl 13-7

Brandon, Oak Grove and NWR are 1-0
Petal, Meridian and Pearl are 0-1

Region 4

No. 11 Gulfport defeats Biloxi 21-7
Ocean Springs defeats D'iberville 27-13
Harrison Central defeats St. Martin 20-16

Thank you it's really hard to get scores from Mississippi when you're out of state.

We should be close to getting realignment numbers here in the next couple weeks.

Forest Hill is guaranteed to move to 7A after absorbing most of Wingfield.
Rumor is that at least one if not 2-3 of the Coast 6A schools (Pascagoula, Hancock, West Harrison) should move up.

The smallest 7A school right now is Lewisburg, followed by Pearl and Murrah.

Region 2/3 is going to be interesting. Brandon and Northwest Rankin really want to stay together. Geographically, NWR is the northernmost Region 3 team and makes the most sense if Forest Hill goes to Region 3. If Murrah drops to 6A, they could simply replace Murrah with Forest Hill. If one of the coast schools replaces Lewisburg, Tupelo would probably move to Region 1 and then you have two teams in the Region 2/3 debacle. Would the MHSAA move both Brandon and Northwest Rankin to the North?

Region 2 would be ridiculous in every sport if they did that (Clinton, Madison, Germantown, Starkville, Brandon and Northwest Rankin). My guess is the map is gerrymandered where you see something weird like Meridian moving to Region 2.

It’s pretty pathetic how bad the Desoto county schools are in football right now.

Its not just football though, Its tough to watch. Lewisburg is the smallest 7A school and they have won the volleyball and baseball titles in their short time in 7A. That school is full of athletes but none can find the football field. I'm about 70% confident that they will drop to 6A next year and be dominant across most sports.

Is Southaven good at anything? Horn Lake? Hernando is carrying the district. DeSoto Central Isn't very good. Region 4 has even more problems!

Consider this: Last year's 7A Championship Games

Volleyball: Lewisburg (Region 1) def. Brandon (Region 3)
Girls Basketball: Tupelo (Region 2) def. Germantown (Region 2)
Boys Basketball: Meridian (Region 3) def. Germantown (Region 2)
Softball: Northwest Rankin (Region 3) def. Hernando (Region 1)
Baseball: Brandon (Region 3) def. Hernando (Region 1)
Football: Oak Grove (Region 3) def. Starkville (Region 2)
Golf: Madison Central Boys (Region 2), Northwest Rankin Girls (Region 3)
Cross Country: Tupelo Girls (Region 2), Pearl Boys (Region 3)
Girl's Soccer: Northwest Rankin (Region 3) def. Clinton (Region 2)
Boy's Soccer: Hernando (Region 1) def. Northwest Rankin (Region 3)
Swimming: Madison Central Boys and Girls (Region 2)
Tennis (Co-ed): Madison Central (Region 2) def. Tupelo (Region 2)
Track: Clinton Boys (Region 2), Clinton Girls (Region 2)

So Region 1 had two championships and two runner up 4 final appearances by two schools)
Region 2 had 8 championships and five runners up (13 final appearances by five schools)
Region 3 had 6 championships and two runners up (7 final appearances by five schools)
Region 4 had 0 championships and 0 runners up.

Region 2's numbers look gaudy until you consider that 4 of the 8 championships are country club sports and three of the remaining four are track/cross country) Tupelo's girls basketball title is the biggest sport won by Region 2.

Region 3 is where its at and its about to get wrecked.

Hernando is the current state champs in baseball and boys soccer and the softball team was runner up. They won the state a couple of years ago. Volleyball just lost to Lewisburg for north state.

Commit JJ Hill with 277 rushing and 77 receiving for Tupelo.

Lewisburg won't be good in football or basketball but will always be good in baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball because of demographics.

Another thing with Lewisburg football......The surrounding academies recruit the underclassmen and non-starters. So they have no depth. ANother problem is the coaching turnover. A baseball guy is coaching Lewisburg's football team at the moment.

The coach that left Lewisburg last year, is pretty good. He is at Horn Lake now and should improve their program soon.

The way the population is growing in Desoto County, I doubt Lewisburg will be going down. Most likely candidates, in order, Murrah, Pearl, Petal, Oxford, St. Martin, Meridian.

Once I get south of I20, I am clueless.

West of 55 and south of 82, I've never been to, my entire Mississippi life. I've always wanted to hunt that NWR too.

The Lewisburg area is exploding. It’s not going down.

So is Hernando. Theres already talk that the new high school being built wasn’t built big enough and will have to be added on to very soon in the future.

Hernando is the exact same way. To compete in football, Hernando and Lewisburg need elite coaching. Desoto County as a whole has very poor coaching when it comes to football. With so many schools in the district, Desoto County is not willing to pay what other schools across the state will pay. When they do get a really good assistant coach, they move along pretty quickly. No reason Desoto Central, Southaven, etc shouldn’t be more competitive than they are.
