the expanded playoff and mega conferences is keeping teams in play who would never have a chance. the dilution of the Big 12 could have a top 4 spot given to a team with 2 losses and possibly not even ranked in the top 15 teams. In both the BIG 10 and SEC we see teams being talked about that would never come up = Nebraska, Indiana, Rutgers, South Carolina, Missouri, etc. The mega conference have created odd scheduling where typical low end teams (i.e. Rutgers) misses any of the top teams, while the top teams are playing each other. With the expansion I know it makes more complex scheduling combinations, but having OSU playing Penn State and Oregon on the road and UMich and Iowa at home is not balance scheduling. Just heard Rutgers is like 25% chance of making playoffs while Penn State is 60%.

At some point, these lower quality teams in the higher quality conferences are going to have a reckoning.
The value that teams are going to be judged on is eyeballs on TV (streaming, etc.). Do the teams like Mary, Indy, Vandy, Ark, bring more viewers? If not, why split the pie with them unless they are truly increasing the size of the pie?

The networks, and by extension the conferences, need the games to fill air time. To the extent that there may be a "reckoning" it's that the lesser teams will receive a smaller share of the pie. ACC is contemplating that now. That can have unforeseen consequences. Last conference to do that in a serious way was the Big East (football).
