If they would have asked alumni to pony up $100 million to call it Paterno Field, alumni would have met that goal and then doubled it
Who got those hard commitments and submitted them with the proposal? I can’t believe it was sourced from only a few pledges and kept secret.

One of the first 'lessons' the wife and I were provided upon moving to Camp Hill/Mechanicsburg, PA from HV (and we were both western PA kids) was the 'shores'.

Me: "Hey, we have to pick up a package at Penny's (this was 1982, btw). What's the best way to get there from here?"
Them: "That's at the Harrisburg Mall" (a look of disgust on faces)
Me: "OK. So?"
Them: "Harrisburg is on the East Shore and we are on the West Shore. We don't go to the East Shore!"
Me: "What are these 'shores' all about?"
Them: "The river! The Susquehanna."
Me: "Isn't there a bridge? And why in the world don't 'we' go to the East Shore?"
I'll stop here...

It is a capital area thing.

Really? Maybe start a go fund me and see if that is the case. Then take it to the board and rub it in their noses.

Maybe. And then those same alumni would have complained that new construction of academic buildings is wasteful. #NotACult

According to the Sports Business Journal's Sports Facility Naming Rights Directory

Top five college by total amount:

IllinoisState Farm Center30yr$60M$2M
Georgia TechBobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field20yr$55M$2.75M
Arizona StateMountain America Stadium16yr$50M$3.13M
San Diego StateSnapdragon Stadium15yr$45M$3M
WashingtonAlaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium10yr$41M$4.1M

Top five college by annual average:

Georgia TechBobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field20yr$55M$2.75M
Colorado StateSonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium15yr$37.65M$2.51M

So 15yr for $50M, it looks like we're tied for 3rd in total $$ and 2nd for average per year.

Ohio State's deal with SafeLite from 2022 is not listed by the Sports Business Journal and I don't think those numbers were ever released.

San Diego State's deal is a bit misleading as it was known that it would also be hosting MLS and NWSL teams and the name will apply for them as well.

Bingo. It’s about the money. And they went with a deal that made sense with regards to funding a stadium renovation that everyone seems to always be complaining about. If they would have got less financing, people would complain. They get a good financial deal…people complain. Complainers gonna complain.

Tied for 2nd or 3rd. That seems about right. Still can’t get to 1st. Fire Franklin!

People aren't complaining about the deal, they have concerns about the process to the deal.

People are complaining regardless, who are we kidding. Some seem to wake up and look for reasons to complain. Then they come here and do it. And yes, some ARE complaining about the deal.

What a nice story. If I’m selling naming rights, I don’t give a dump about it though.
So, you are complaining about a top three field naming rights deals in the country? Given to a company founded by a PSU alum? Step back and listen to that for a second.

Those aren't perfect comps because some of them are for the stadium itself (Arizona St, San Diego St), and/or Washington's deal which covered multiple buildings (whereas this one is simply for the field at Beaver Stadium).

It was stated in the meeting today that this doesn't stop PSU from going out and getting a corporate sponsor for the Stadium (which I'm sure would blow away some of those other figures). And if a gofundme for naming the field after JoePa would generate $100 million as someone stated, how much would the gofundme generate if we name the whole stadium after him?

To add some more context for those that didn't join the call...Kraft said that usually, deals like this are brokered by a 3rd party which takes about 25% of the cut of the deal. In this instance, PSU worked directly with the company/founder and this deal came together. It should involve the company's logo in a few spots on the field (Kraft said much as you'd see the College Football playoff logo on the field in a few spots).

And elicit the same folks to complain relentlessly.

Some yes will always complain, most are concerned about the process and usual secrecy of the BOT. No worries we just disagree on the process.

My thoughts...I likely would have voted against it if I was on the board as I would have wanted more time and made sure that this wasn't a decision that was rushed. However, I don't see this as a dark day for PSU as Anthony stated...we're doing what we need to do to fund this huge capital project, and this does seem like an above-market offer (and a bit of a combo of an alumni "gift" and a marketing deal).

There were many that would have complained regardless of how this decision came about...but it's another instance of a small group of BOT members forcing the rest of the board into a corner and not giving them all the info/tools needed to properly make a decision. And as usually, the vast majority of the board gave the rubber stamp that they needed to move forward.

Our thoughts are very similar... shame the rest of the BOT are afraid to push back and use due diligence in making decisions.

Maybe if the BOT operated with some integrity and forthrightness, a few less people would complain.
It’s a first world problem. If the worst part of someone’s day is the naming rights of a football field, then I guess some here live very charmed lives. It seems like many make the choice the be outraged. I can’t imagine going through life like that, but that’s where we are in society. Life’s too short for that nonsense. These naming rights will most likely not affect those complaining in any way shape or form on a daily basis. But, hey, have at it. Be outraged.

They act like it was a back room deal with cigar smoke and a BOT member with a handshake. They have contracts with Elevate and Playfly that literally are working to get the best deals for the University.

If West Shore Homes is sponsoring this, then the bathrooms had better be IMMACULATE. No more troughs unless they're gold-lined.

Expect to see this at the 25 yard lines and throughout the stadium.

FYI:

A 1999 Penn State graduate, B.J. Werzyn is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of West Shore Home, LLC

I read on the premium site that this deal was in the works for 3 years. So theories about BOT blocking any issues related to JoePa and stadium/field name may have been underfoot.

Something to think about: Will alumni soon be getting West Shore Home mailers sent to their homes because? Big $$$ gives access to info. I don’t trust the BOT at all.

My disgust for the evil cabal that the board of Trustees is knows no bounds. There's a special place in hell awaiting those that threw Joe under the bus to hide their ties and dealings with The Second Mile.
There's no denying that college athletics is now a financial arms race and revenue streams are needed. Soon, you'll see advertising on players' uniforms as well as on the playing field itself.
However, I can't help but wonder, if a donor offered Penn State more money than West Shore Homes did to name the playing field, "Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium," would they have accepted it? I highly doubt it.

I would expect coaches as well as players uniforms to start looking like Nascar drivers suits soon. As well as players helmets all carrying sponsors and logos.

We've had a Nike logo over the players heart's for years but God forbid if a player's name is on the back of the jersey.
