For those wondering what ESPN was up to when reported of their new story were circulating. Here it is
EDIT: for those who are already upset, or not wanting to view/dignify ESPN (I understand), clique at your own risk. It’s not flattering and quite lengthy

Never heard this story before - it’s awful. But, the extra effort to pin as much of this as possible (and to loosely imply ‘coverup’) on Paterno is pathetic. This guy was a monster and got what he deserved. ESPN needs a new hobby.

It seems go beyond a Penn State bias. It's more like a Paterno bias. If the ESPN staff wanted to, they could write articles about any number of bad actors who played college football anywhere else. And those stories would be much more recent than 1979. The article contained more photos of Joe than it did of the bad guy. Their agenda is to try to throw as much crap at Joe as possible.

I blame Joe for Bernie Fine.
I blame Joe for Bo Schembechler.
I blame Joe for Jim Jordan.
I blame Joe for Larry Nassar.

And there was much rejoicing in the halls of the BOT.

This is the first I had ever head of this former player. So naturally, Joe had to know what this kid was doing in his free time. Sure.

Yea never heard of him either. I do find it interesting though that Paterno tossed some pretty good players off the team after doing something similar at a bowl game. Think we were playing Tulane in the '79 liberty bowl or throwing a pretty good TE (Ricky Sayles and a very good WR Bobby Engram) off the team for stealing.
Oh and that ESPN scoop....LOL its been talked about before...

Its a big nothing burger.
Bigger spoon, stir harder ESPN.

I’m curious to hear from people who were on campus in ‘78-‘79. The kid was on the football team and got arrested. It had to make the papers. How big a story was it at the time?

Now you see clearly how the media has changed. The ‘79 article mentions hodne in passing and gives a balanced view of Joe. The new piece (of sh|t) focuses on hodne and blames Joe.

I‘d be willing to bet the author of the new piece (of sh|t) has never seen the ‘79 article.

I was on campus those years and one time I was stopped by campus police on the way back to my dorm from her dorm. Had to be about 78-79. They did not take me in, just asked where i was going and where I had been and I told them to contact my girlfriend for verification. They indicated they got reports of someone molesting female students. I guess I fit the description at the time, but nothing else came of it.

Total bs sensationalism on the part of ESPIN. The article has a picture of Hodne with Joe superimposed on it. The article implies the Sandusky issue was hidden by the program too. I never want to see those a..holes on campus again. Screw college game day.

What I learned from this piece is that what every high profile organization needs — as a pillar of its existence — is commitment to publicly highlight all the flaws of its parts.

OK, ESPN, let’s hear it: 40 years of your dirty laundry.

LOL, yea the last thing ESPN wants is someone looking at the skeleton's in their closet, I mean the ones that got out are bad enough.

It's pretty amazing how I went from being a huge ESPN fan to loathing the network. Michigan, OSU, MSU actual real sex abuse scandals involved hundreds more verified complaints to administration that were willfully ignored for years - and yet - the media doesn't give a ****. It boggles my mind.

The media has devolved into a special group of scum.

I read it. I was in school then. Knew or know most of the people mentioned. I hate when people try to judge an incident with the wrong frame of time. Judging a 1970's incident with a 2020's lens, is just stupid. Sexual assault is sexual assault regardless of the time, but messaging, the media, the courts, the societal norms, technology are so different.

One item I will totally agree with is Irv Pankey. Irv is a great guy. He lived with Kip out near what is now The Greek off North Atherton. They had some epic parties. While Irv was playing for the Rams, my wife and I where taking my Mom on a trip to the west coast and we saw him at Dulles. He was so kind to my mom though he hadn't seen her in several years. I'm sure she never forgot it.

What more should have Joe done? Oh yeah, get on the internet, get interviewed by ESPN, go on a couple of cable news shows, etc. Oh yeah, it's 1978, none of that existed.

I got through about half of the article during my lunch break. Horrible story, but I never heard of the guy before. Certainly seems like the article was starting to try to blame Paterno, or at least accuse him of pressuring one of the women to drop the case. Typical ESPN agenda, but I’ll see how the rest of the article goes.

If you read the whole article, it seems like a reasonable picture of Joe. It also gives the reason that so many people outside PSU hated Joe. He won too much. They might say it was his holier than thou attitude but the truth was they were tired of losing to him. Plain and simple.

I did read it just don't see the point of bringing up something that happend 42 years ago. There are more than enough stories (before Joe's death) that are more recen that could have done that.
I mean the SI article I linked from 1980 did a really good job of it. This one, IMO, not so much.
But I definitely agree with your premise.
