Allowing me to enjoy about 9 wins per year. Also failing just enough so that I can come here and enjoy the agony of the "WE DESERVE BETTER" fanboys.
You really don’t want to compete with the big boys? Not even a little? Remember the 9 wins are vs blue hens, Rutgers, Kent etc. Did you conduct yourself at work like 8 n 4? In the bedroom? Raising your kids?

Here’s another - but relatively recent (and for those who say I say nothing nice/good to say about Franklin) - since 2019, only two power five teams are better against the spread than Penn State - Oregon State and Kansas State. And Penn State is undefeated ATS since Oct 15, 2022.

This link says PSU lost 4 times vs spread just last season. PSU was favored in the Peach Bowl.

Ha. Bad on me; source of my info was from an article dated 10/20/23 - before the four losses ATS. D’oh!

I'm not suiting up. Nor am I on the sidelines. Understanding these basic concepts will help you tremendously. Will a PSU Natty improve your bedroom performance? If you think so....seek professional help.

Remember, the wins vs. Rutgers, Maryland or Indiana could turn to loses. As my father would say...that'll really give you something to cry about.

Conducting yourself at work like 4 n 8 leads to you retiring in lower middle-class Delaware, still working through retirement while you try to fend off all the Amazon delivery men from enjoying your hot tub with your wife ... and incessantly bad-mouthing people as being happy with 4 more wins than you ever had, even though they've been even better than 8 n 4.

Except--they did. I remember.
Yeah, they dreamt big. Lots of rocket scientists and surgeons coming out of the ranks, and everyone kept track of that educational ledger, rather than wins and losses. They weren't just worried about base graduation rates in throwaway majors. And they tallied all this up while riding their unicorns on rainbows. I totes forgot. My bad.

Just thinking around my era, Matt Bahr was a EE major and worked in the field after leaving the NFL. Lenkaitis played for the Patriots--and was the team dentist. Steve Geise is a doctor. And, given that I'm old, I'm not able to recall the guy that was in the polymer science program that I had a Chem class or two with--but the guy who sat behind me at the Beav for 10 year had him as a dentist in NEPA. Then there's Buddy Tesner who became one of the first sports medicine docs in Ohio (I saw him for a knee (yes, I "had a knee") once). Yeah, there were guys that took bonehead classes. Had Sociology 101 with a couple. We were not perfect and it wasn't "Camelot". But there were lots who took it seriously, as did the fans, back then. You do them a disservice.

I feel the need to chime in with a couple other names of note for both academic majors coupled with football notoriety ...
Jim Bradley (Scrap's older brother) is an orthopedic surgeon ans Steelers team physician.
I remember George Kulka and Neal Smith from my CE classes (although they were a year ahead of me).

Maybe ancient history, but was a source of pride that these guys could play football and be something other than a football player.

You're picking out exceptions here and there throughout a number of years. You're proving the rule. There are exceptions today, as well.

youre fine with my Alma mater going 8-4. I’m not. I don’t see I need any help at all understanding anything. It would be great fun to hang with the big boys.

I did not feel like going through the entire roster--but my examples are within 10 years of each other, as I recall. But note that back then, you were lucky if 2 or 3 guys made the NFL in any given year (and the NFL was much smaller). Everyone else had to go pro--in something else. Heck, to some extent that was true of the NFL in the 1970s. The crazy money hadn't arrived yet, and the average career in the NFL was not very long. Heck, it's not long now: 3.3 years according to ESPN. You are still doing them--and the fans--a disservice.

Has to be Generations of Greatness uniforms right?
Handling our program and representing our university with class.
No names on uniforms.

#subjectminesmatter Franklin era traditions, not traditions Franklin is himself responsible for starting. (This is the third attempt at an answer, and it’s final.)

Coach Paterno never spit? I’d given it zero thought, but I don’t recall ever seeing him spit.
He just took 17 years to win his first natty.

Is that what you did after Paterno ran the ball up the middle 4 times on the goal line against Bama in '78?

No. But he did have a child rapist on his staff for 30 years. I'll stick with Franklin.

As a fan, I want to win every game. My life experience taught me that isn't likely. I like Franklin. He runs a good program. I also know he's a good guy...as he has been very good to my family. Actually there's a part of me that hopes he leaves PSU. He's independently wealthy and will have little trouble finding work. I truly believe the nay sayers will always be here because they somehow believe WE DESERVE BETTER.

You can tell when a guy worked in a government or education job. Doing good is enough in those places. “James is a nice guy and he wins 9 times a year and I’m happy.”

Meanwhile in the private sector doing ok gets you nowhere. You can expect a stagnant career, or a demotion, if you are lucky.

Franklin is not earning his salary. He is a disappointment by any measure. He should have moved on several years ago when his record against ranked teams and the Big Two proved he was not capable of performing at the level for which he is compensated.

If Penn STate has trouble raising money for players and facilities it is directly attributable to the lack of wins against the teams they claim are their peers.

In the private sector he would have had his *** handed to him after that pathetic losing season he delivered.

Bullshiat.
He won it in 1969. The fact they didn't actually give it to him is relatively meaningless.

I like CJF. I do. But if anybody thinks 10 years in he's somehow gonna figure it out and win a Natty....

Scooby, "no one" referred to fans. Try again.
Except ... the fans did care. Read John Bacon's book Fourth and Long. It was the thing that really surprised him about Penn State fans. And he's a "Michigan Man" (TM). He had no particular bias toward that view. I don't know how long you've been a Penn State fan, but if you were around back in the day, you would have seen it too. It's also one reason there was so much schadenfreude in regard to PSU when the scandal broke.

No matter how you want to quantify it, it took him 17 years. And 4 runs up the middle against Alabama on the goal line that I can still see in my head. Ugh.

No, I was 12, and I cried

Still waiting for Big Game James to have his Georgia 1982 and Miami 1986 games....not holding my breath
Well, it took Paterno 17 years to have his Georgia and 21 years to have his Miami. James is at 11 right. Let's see how it shakes out.

Yeah, but in any current system he would have been playing for a NC in what - year four or five. And then a bunch of times after that.

So would Franklin's teams. We should have been in the playoff in 2016, his 3rd year. We can go back and forth, but, we waited for a long time for the big one when Joe coached.

Why wasn't that your reply when this was said (even when fans were mentioned)?

You mentioned something about "exceptions". And you would have gotten away with it if is wasn't for some meddling kids.

Also, see @kgilbert78 's post #105. There were fans that cared.

You think the Grand Experiment idea that brought in the donations to the athletic program during Joe's era was because no one believed in it?

It's okay, you could have said "many", "most", "some", or "few".

Nothing would make me happier in the world of football than Big Game James getting over the hump

This might surprise you but people can admire Paterno AND hope Franklin surpasses his accomplishments

No one cared. It was just a convenient excuse to rally around something and feign superiority (and excuse away the occasional hiccup). It's a pretty basic psychological phenomenon. No one actually cared if the football players were getting great educations and going on to successful careers. We didn't have pep rallies to highlight kids with challenging majors and promote their GPAs. And if they were all taking advertising, or sociology, or whatever throw away nonsense, and barely scraping by, as long as the Ws continued to roll in, everyone would have been happy.

I see the issue as perspective. Some folks see PSU as a top 5 or 6 program. I see it as more of an 8 -12 program. To be clear, there can be top 5 seasons. I just feel that if we are totally honest PSU historically ranks 8, 9 or 10.
To further complicate matters....in the brave new NIL world, PSU will struggle to match $$$ with programs they traditionally out recruited.
