They had one in February but I missed it. Next one is for March 8-12.....good luck!

Pappy’s back: Virginia ABC holds Van Winkle product lotteries

Several products from the highly collectible Van Winkle line will be available for the opportunity to purchase through the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority’s (ABC) online lotteries in February and March. The whiskey, often dubbed the hardest to find spirit due to its low production, is offered by lottery to ensure equitable distribution.

Virginia ABC customers will have the opportunity to enter online to win the chance to purchase Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Bourbon 23 Year, 20 Year and 15 Year; Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year; Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12 Year; and Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbon 10 Year whiskeys.

Each online lottery entry form will be available for five days. All entries received during each five-day entry period will have an equal opportunity to win. The lottery is open to individual Virginia residents 21 and older. Virginia ABC held a separate lottery event for mixed beverage licensees with these offerings. Winners will be selected at random in a drawing from all valid entries received during the lottery entry period. At the time of purchase, winners must present a valid Virginia photo ID. The name and address on the photo ID must both match the name and address on the winner’s entry.

The dates for each online lottery, number of bottles available and product prices are:

March 8-12, 2023:

Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 Year ($139.99) –74 bottles available
Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 Year ($229.99) – 146 bottles available
Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23 Year ($329.99) – 1 bottle available
Winners notified by April 3, 2023.

The process for checking lottery results can vary depending on the specific lottery you participated in. However, here are some general steps that you can follow:

Look for the official website of the lottery: The first step is to visit the official website of the lottery. This website will have information on the winning numbers for each drawing, as well as any other important information related to the lottery.

Check the winning numbers: Once you are on the official website of the lottery, look for the section that displays the winning numbers for the most recent drawing. If the numbers on your ticket match the winning numbers, then you have won a prize. Check more info on NumeroDeHoy.

This Bourbon craze that has people running all over for their "collection" rather than drinking the stuff, causing ordinary whiskeys to be highly inflated, is a fool's errand. Consider zigging while others zag. There are very fine single malts going for their usual prices available and the enjoyment of drinking them will equal if not surpass the mash bills of most of these hard to find bourbons.

Yeah, it's nutty. I don't collect; I enjoy. To your point, on the Disney Cruise we took last year I met a guy at a bourbon tasting who showed me a picture of his collection - it looked like a walk-in pantry with bottles of pretty much everything three and four bottles deep. Insane. Then he tells me he doesn't drink much :/.

Oh - I didn't win the lottery for any of the bottles. There were around 55,000 submissions per bottle.

Another lottery for folks in VA - Blanton’s ‘Straight From The Barrel’ the highlight…

Has anybody here ever won one of these? I know a handful of guys plus all of you that have entered and I don’t know anyone who has won before?

Some folks in older threads mentioned winning some of the Van Winkle lotteries. The VA ones get about 75,000 entries for fewer than 200 bottles.

I just won the Pa lottery for a bottle of Stag straight bourbon barrel proof for $55. I’ve never had it before but I thought I’d enter the lottery anyway. I understand it’s a good bourbon.

I’m sure that these legendary limited releases are fine drinks, but I am a firm believer that it is mostly a marketing and market manipulation money game on par with the diamond industry.

Look what happens when someone slips a high end bottle in with a cheap booze tasting.

Pound for pound nothing beats a good cognac and you can really tell the difference (even with my limited palette) at top price points. I’d say the same for red wine too. I think scotch at higher price points is noticeable - bourbon not so much in my experience.
