We didn't have it at school but yea we ate it at home that way a lot. Like I said my dad loved it. It wasn't until I moved to Baltimore that I found out how much of a staple it is there, it's right up there with crabs and crab cakes. Sometimes on the same plate. We had fries with gravy in elementary school in Beaver County.
I don't think so. In the late sixties the "new" college diner, for instance, would have a counter full of customers, most eating fries and gravyI think thats more a Bmore and MD thing, although my dad liked it so not sure where he picked it up from, possibly the Navy.
Since Franklin is from the east side of the state most his choices make sense but there are other foods from the central part and western part that are woefully forgotten.
Central Part of the state Chicken Corn Soup has to be included.
Western Part dare I say Gobs?
but for actual food, like another poster said, Chicken and Waffles and not the fried chicken with maple syrup abomination is at the top of my list and then Pierogis.
It was a regular part of my 3 AM diet in my early 20s stops at Pats Diner in Belmar, NJ. Pork roll, egg, and cheese with cheese fries and gravy, then time for night nights. Pretty sure that meal was sponsored by a local cardiologist. We didn't have it at school but yea we ate it at home that way a lot. Like I said my dad loved it. I do.On the flip side, NC bbq appears to be impossible to duplicate up north, plus nobody knows what I’m talking about when I order a chopped platter with greens. So there’s that.
I like all types and of BBQ and all types of sides from Mac and cheese to collardsI do.
I prefer the whole hog Eastern NC style, with vinegar based sauce. Pulled. But no collards for me please.
I’ll have to look that up! Betski’s it is. Dad’s side of the family is from Vilnius and Minersvilie. My nana was from Lithuania and thus we had a lot of Polish foods in our younger days. She used to make fresh Kielbasa (and let us help with stuffing into casings). She used to make some great perogies with potato pancakes. Good stuff.
Later in life we used to get our Polish goodies over in the Richmond neighborhood in Philadelphia. I hear that some of the same places are still pumping out the sausages and other delicasies.
There’s lots of smoked kielbasa around that comes close, but I’ve never been able to find the fresh kielbasa like my granny and the folks in the Richmond neighborhood are known for.
Visited a place called Betski’s a few years ago in Raleigh that was real good, but I don’t get over that way much.
Czerw’s is still at it in Port Richmond and you can get a kielbasi “cheese steak” at Gault & Co Malt House called the Wit or Witowski, good stuffMy nana was from Lithuania and thus we had a lot of Polish foods in our younger days.
