I thought that people didn't like that a woman was the new 007 in the last movie, not that she was James Bond.
I personally think a character from books, especially a well established series of books, should remain true to the author's hard work and cast someone that looks like the author's vision, but I'm a big book fan. "Good actor" or "popular actor" shouldn't be the only criteria.
Bond was never going to be a woman. A woman got the 007 designation in the last film, because Bond "retired" (or some such thing).
You're right. And while my post was hard over on "follow the authors vision" if I thought hard enough I could probably come up with some examples like yours where a "change" worked.I'm in the middle. I mean, one of the best alt casting choices ever was Zendaya as Mary Jane Parker....but, it can go the other way too.
Not quite. Ian Flemming actually worked for the British secret service and left when they left the top agent Sidney Reilly , out to dry during the Russian revolution after WW1 . Reilly was a genius at espionage and tried to stop the Bolshevic revolution , but was caught and later executed .
I've read all the Ian Fleming books and shorts, and Bond is mostly serious, deadly-when-necessary operator; very dry sense of humor. Which is why I think Idris Elba would be good in the role. He's a fantastic actor, great range, gravitas, physically can do the action and stunts. He was floated at the time of Craig's selection, along with Clive Owen and others. But to my changrin these candidates in my mind are becoming too old for Bond, who should be in his early-mid 30's or so, per the novels. But Pietro Maximoff?
Yes, Johnson seems too boyish. Bond is not boyish.
Without googling, I think Sam Neill (another fine dramatic actor, who could do the physical parts and stunts in his younger days) played Reilly, right?

Craig was excellent but there will never be another Sean Connery. And this from someone who got hooked on Bond during the Roger Moore era.
