We first saw the super group in 74 at Rich Stadium in Buffalo with Jesse Colin Young and the Youngbloods and Santana opening. CSNY played every bit of 4 hours. We took 120 joints into the stadium along with some other party favors and by the time it was over everything had either been consumed or dispensed into the crowd. We were just part of a big rag tag gang of high school kids having a great time. You remember some shows more than others for the fun and your remember others for the music. This one still sticks out in my memory on both accounts. We got to see them ( CSNY ) several more times over the years, another show that sticks out was a summer show at Hershey maybe 15 years ago.
In between and after we saw CN, CSN, DC, Stills/ Young Band, Stills on various tours over the years. They never ever disappointed. Never. Never had an off evening. They wrote great songs and the performed at the top of their ability every single show. Neil still brings it but there is no turning back the clock. I implore several of my addicted to the News Algorithm friends to turn off the news, put on some music and chill out. If you can’t find anything new then listen to what used to make you happy. There isn’t a song they wrote be it big chord rocker or gentle ballad that didn’t and doesn’t bring a smile to your face or jog a memory in your cranium of a moment that was worth thinking about again and again.
He was a beyond interesting man who owned up to his shortcomings and the rifts he created. At times, David Crosby spent more time hurtling over the abyss than the abyss could handle. RIP.
And if today wasn’t the seminal departure that makes you realize time is fleeting, hopefully some other passing does.
As Warren Zevon said….Enjoy every sandwich.
