Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I can say I got to meet this fine gentleman at a GCC luncheon in Greenville several years ago. May God be with his family and many friends during this time of need.

This is what was posted.

Gamecock Central was an important part of his life, and he lived a great one! He was the founder of Fighting Gamecocks Forum (FGF), and later merged with Brian Shoemaker's Gamecock Central. He was an awesome Grandad to me! Any stories or questions that you may have you can email me at [email protected]. We appreciate the love and support. Thanks!

Sad. He responded to me the first time I came on here. Then I met him a few times at Founders Park. RIP Coupe

A cool read from 1998 from Go UPstate

Rabid fans search Web for latest buzz

MATTHEW K. PRUITT

So your favorite football team has dumped its coach after a dismal season. The search is on for a new leader to blaze the path to glory.
The team won't say much and you can't wait one more nail-biting minute to find out the latest. What's a sports fan to do?

Fans of Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, both of which ousted their coaches at the end of the season, have turned to the Internet to get insider information and, more often, pass along the latest buzz. On the Web, rabid fans look for insider information and sound off on hiring prospects. Would-be coaches and sportscasters make predictions about who the next coach will be, when the announcement will be made and how much it will cost the school.

As always, the gadflies tend to the "rumor-has-it" department: One coach said his family doesn't like it here. Another was looking at real estate in our town. The deal is done, but they haven't announced it yet. And the last category is made up of those who simply lament the amount of anxiety-ridden time they've had to spend waiting for a new coach (as of today, 10 days for USC, 15 for Clemson).

Jim Streeter, webmaster for the Fighting Gamecocks Forum (www.sportsonly.com/a/5031/) said a record-setting 625 messages were posted on his site Wednesday, up from an average of about 200 to 250 a day during the football season. The Web forum is just a new wrinkle in an old tradition, Streeter said. "It's no different than a bunch of guys sitting down at a local bar talking," Streeter said. "The only difference is one guy's in Chicago, and one in Columbia, and one in Hawaii, and so on."

Well, not quite. Information -- whether true or not -- can move faster on the Internet than in a middle school lunch room. The mere mention of former coach Danny Ford's name brought an instant flurry of speculation onto the Net. Rumors of USC Athletic Director Mike McGee's visit to former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz at his Orlando, Fla., home were in cyberspace before McGee's plane left. With so many theories moving at such a rapid pace, the Web-surfer has to learn to be discerning, Streeter said. "It can get pretty far out there," he said. "But you learn who are the more reliable sources and who aren't." But here are a couple items Streeter has seen recently but doesn't lend much credence to: Outgoing USC coach Brad Scott has accepted another coaching job -- five different sources list five different jobs in the past two days. USC will name Holtz's son, Skip, currently a coach at the University of Connecticut, as head coach and make Lou an assistant. Another popular rumor suggests USC will name Lou as head coach and make Skip an offensive coordinator in an attempt to prime him for the head coaching job.

While those might be long shots, some of the rumors turn out to be surprisingly prescient. At The Esso Club site for Clemson fan's (www.essoclub.com), the Street Talk section shows the low-down on the firing of coach Tommy West, the likely coaching prospects, and some details about the negotiations, much of which look to be true. Streeter said that some of the rumors turn out to be true because they come from inside sources: people at the school or people in the community who "put two and two together." The rest he chalks up to the law of averages. "If you saw off a shotgun, and load it with bird-shot and shoot it, you're going to hit something," he said.
