Yes it was a Big Ten crew. If memory serves me, Cannon was the referee for Clemson's 2019 CFP National Championship game win over Alabama.
I think many would agree that some aspects of their performance was less than acceptable. Doesn't give one a warm and fuzzy feeling should we get
this crew again later in the season.

Referee: Mike Cannon
Umpire: Ken Zelmanski
Linesman: BJ Henry
Line Judge: Jeff Meslow
Back Judge: Robert Smith Jr.
Field Judge: Ryan Gannon
Side Judge: Joel Clay
Center Judge: Bryan Banks

One of the officials was on our flight into Atlanta. I wanted to joke with him by asking him for a fair game, but he was on the phone the entire time at the gate.

No crew is going to be 100%.

There were a couple bad calls....in a close game they might have some bearing, but I didn't necessarily think "this is a crew I never want to see again "

How did you know he was an official? Do they wear their stripe shirts when traveling?

What would you say if the game was tied and the opponent was Michigan away?
I know you didn’t ask me, but I would say the same thing. Obvious holding, followed by an obvious flop. Should have been a penalty, Dennis-Sutton shouldn’t flop.

In fairness, that was a bit of a flop.
So, in your opinion (not that I care), what is a holding penalty and a knock down afterwards worth? 5 yard penalty on the offense or earlier entrance for your dinner reservations?

The announcers commented about it. Pretty funny when they said the game was over and that the refs wanted it over.

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but someone in another thread noticed the ref pointing at the scoreboard when DDS complained. 🤷‍♂️

I was wondering the same thing...seemed like a pretty well officiated game to me. I think Cannon's crew is the best in the conference.
I don't know the specifics on "intentional grounding", but there were 3 times the AU QB threw the ball right as potentially being sacked with no one in the area and IIRC twice he was in the grasp when doing so. If those were all okay then it would seem most sacks can be avoided if a QB has the presence of mind to just throw the ball incomplete.

A couple of those times, he was outside of the tackle box and it got back to the line of scrimmage, so no penalty. The one that I thought should have been called a grounding was one where he rolled right and the throw didn't make it back to the line...however, the Line Judge was pointing at a receiver in the area (it was a pretty generous "in the area", but couldn't tell exactly where he was since he was out of the camera view).

Start with the head hit on SC. Tacklers' fists raised to just below SC's chin then raised up to snap his head back. No flag?
Meh. Face mask to face mask. The problem with that was the quick face mask grab which led to him taking that pop.
Look, I’m not saying the officials didn’t screwup. They did and they do every week, for both sides. I didn’t watch that game and come out of it with an sort of anti-Penn State feeling.

There was nothing whatsoever illegal about that hit. Clean play, and the refs correctly didn't throw a flag.

The call that irked me me was the one against Mustipher for lining up in the neutral zone only to have AU do it 3+ times and not get flagged.

That's because the AU's center kept moving the ball forward two feet before he snapped it.

It's not just good or bad calls, it's consistency. Drives me nuts when there's holding going on throughout the game but they throw the flag in the red zone. Timing just seems specious at times.

What you don’t think a ref ever bet on the spread or the over and under?

What was the problem with the officiating?

Absolutely nothing. It's just in some folks' DNA to ***** and moan about the officiating no matter what happens. They've always been wronged! They're perpetual victims. It's usually folks who don't know the game who want to feel relevant and important.

There's always a blown call here or there ... and they almost always even out, but the dingleberries will only see the one-sided nature of a two-sided coin, and then attach some kind of conspiracy to it. It's a familiar refrain in today's world.
