UM may not be a top 10 job like he says, but it's not far from it. Most of our fans haven't seen much college baseball outside the SEC and don't fully realize how far ahead of the rest of the country the SEC is in terms of facilities. When Southern Cal came to Starkville a few years ago, one of their players asked what minor league team played at Dudy Noble. When he was told that MSU didn't share the stadium with anybody, he said, "No way. No college team has a stadium like this." Now I realize there are schools outside the SEC that have nice stadiums, but there are damn few that would even be an average SEC stadium.

MSU is to college baseball today as Texas and Southern Cal were to college football throughout most of the 90s.

if they offered me the highest salary in the country, so I guess you're right. However fan support, facilities, etc. usually go hand in hand with what the coaches make. We can afford to pay more, of course we'd be assuming more people show up for our games. That's something Byrne must factor in. If he's gonna nut up and pay somebody big, he's gonna have to go overboard with getting ticket sales up I would think.

Funny how college baseball is just now starting to turn into the business that college football turned into about 15 years ago. Many of the top baseball schools have coaches who have been there a long time.

Difference being we have never won a national championship but I agree somewhat - so much more could be done with our baseball program.

we're probably more like an Auburn, Texas A&M or UCLA. Get the right hire and/or situation and then we could likely get over that hump (heh) and become one of the higher level programs.

AA - hoops: we are MSU

...we proved that we still can draw more fans than anybody in the country. Set the record Friday and BROKE it Saturday. We have a storied history and we are known nation wide as being a premier program. We have an IPF with a famous name on it. We have DNF and the legendary LFL. WE helped invent college baseball. Yes, thats right, our fans deserve some credit for college baseball being what it is today. Our fans want the baseball situation fixed. We will respond to the next coach with vim and vigor. Make no mistake....we WILL be back and back with a vengence. Any coach out there would drool over the MSU job. It is a coveted position. greg can call any coach with confieindence .

to be first. When we first built the stadium we set the standard, then everyone else followed suit--some to a higher degree.

When we expanded, we took it to another level and again, everyone followed suit--most are doing so to a better degree.

On a smaller scale, it worked just like that in football, ole miss expanded VH, then we answered with a really nice expansion that was better and then ole miss answered that with an even nicer expansion.

I think the logic is that if we can get a coach to come in here and be a more consistent winner again, we'll expand to replace the crappy bleachers, maybe add some luxury seating and again set the standard.

The one disadvantage we have is that we can't create concession/bathroom area that keeps play visible like HOK made so popular and like you see with Baum.

our fans were knowledgeable enough to stay away from the games during Polk Part II. Imagine what our SR attendance would have been had we been in a different situation. Probably would have broke our own records.

I prefer the patently collegiate atmostphere of Ole Miss and Mississippi State to Arkansas. With the dancing cheerleaders on the dugouts, the hot tub in the leftfield corner, etc., Baum seems more like a packed minor league park than a college baseball experience. All that being said, it's a great new facility. They've set the bar really high for LSU and South Carolina but I imagine those two teams will at least come close to meeting it.

I think one thing that keeps State from being that top 5 job is that you have to deal with us being a nationally contending program that is within your own state. I talked to a former LSU player with two NCAA rings, who's from NOLA no less, this weekend and he said that all things being equal, Ole Miss has the best recruiting pitch in the SEC West right now.

He also said that Manieri is a micro-managing know it all who will do enough to keep his job but never reach the top of the heap.

But I suppose that's another thread for another day.

And what do all 4 of those have in common? They're all in the SEC. If you'll look further around (i.e. outside the SEC), you'll realize that like Dawgstudent said, probably 6 of the top 10 schools in the country in terms of facilities are in the SEC. And we're damn well one of those 6.</p>

Having to deal with a nationally contending program in their own state sure hasn't affected South Carolina. It hasn't stopped UF either (although they have struggled some lately). The only reason Ole Miss is currently so far ahead of MSU is that we are saddled with a coach that his head so far up his own *** that he can see what he just ate for lunch. If we get a coach like Casey to come in that actually cares about coaching baseball, you will quickly see us return to at least your equal at worst.

MSU baseball has been dormant for quite a while. The simple fact is that MSU, more than any other SEC school, defined college baseball. We have everything needed to be a powerhouse except the coach. I will predict that if, IF, we can get a coach with the fire & passion for recruiting & coaching at this level, that some of the shine will fade from Bianco as he will actually have competition like he has not seen since taking over at Ole Miss.

Yes, but I still think ours is better. Newer does not mean better, look at Swayze. Nobody comes close to our whole experience and 'atmosphere'.

Our success is in NO WAY dependent on what Ole Miss does. Let's be clear on that.

If anyone can recreate the Super Regional from June, then maybe I'll listen. Ole Miss has a great atmosphere, but there is nothing better than 13K at Dement Stadium. I can't imagine what better pitch there is b/c the other advantage ole miss has over State is Oxford...and frankly, all the good baseball players Ive ever known really aren't into that and would rather be at Rick's on a Saturday night. But again, I don't know everyone so maybe Lance Lynn is into overpriced boutiques and white tablecloth restaurants.

who will proclaim with no sense of irony that Ole Miss football will one day take its rightful place back atop the summit of the SEC? Maybe try and go to the board archives from January of 2004? Anyone got a link for delusional Notre Dame fan boards?

Seriously, aside from the ability to pack a **** ton of fans inside the chain link fence that surrounds your baseball stadium, what makes y'all so superior to the rest of the SEC?

Over-inflated sense of worth is apparently a two-way street that crosses both Johnny Vaught Boulevard and Ron Polk Avenue.

we have been to the CWS in the very recent past...even if it is anomaly. Ole Miss would have to go to a BCS championship game to equal that.

and fan support is pretty important. We have amazing atmosphere, we have an indoor facility, we have a building strictly for baseball offices, we have a strong baseball-only support group (like ole miss) and we have great tradition. None of those factors alone make us great, but I think the combination would lead one to logically believe that you shouldn't have to scratch and claw to get into the SEC tourney and you should be able to host a regional or 2 every 3 years.

No one expects to win the conference every year, but once every 19 years would be nice. You do realize that our football program has won more division titles than our baseball program right? I think we should expect our baseball program to perform better in the conference than our football program does.

Nothing I've said is delusional. The post you replied to said that all things weren't equal and that MSU's success does not depend on what Ole Miss does, that's all. But you go into a rant about Spirit posters, blah, blah.

Seems to me like you're realizing you're going overboard propping Ole Miss up and knocking MSU down.

and as you mention, fan support is at the top of the SEC (when we're winning). My point is that most SEC jobs would be very attractive to any other coach in the country outside the SEC. And the MSU job is one of the better SEC jobs. And I'd be saying pretty much the same thing if Bianco were the one retiring and UM were the school looking for a new coach. I do think that overall, our job is more attractive than yours is. But both jobs are very, very good jobs.

is capable of. Think about this a minute, we have been average at best this decade. We've slipped into the NCAA Tournament by the skin of our teeth a couple of times, missed out on Hoover twice, and have only hosted one regional and one super regional. Still, every year but this one we put 10K fans at the Saturday Super Bulldog game, and last year with less than a week's notice we set the record for 2 day super regional attendance. Make no mistake, when MSU has a team that actually lives up to what we are supposed to be there is no school in the country that can match our fan support. And also bear in mind that this fan support comes out to essentially the middle of nowhere to watch this program play.

Here is MSU's recent history in college baseball

1997: Regionals, CWS
1998: Regionals, CWS
1999: Regionals
2000: Regionals, Super Regionals
2001: Regionals, Super Regionals
2002: --
2003: Regionals
2004: Regionals
2005: Regionals
2006: Regionals
2007: Regionals, Super Regionals, CWS

If we roughly translate Regionals as a bowl game, Super Regionals as a NYD bowl, & the CWS as a BCS game, MSU has 3 BCS appearances, 3 NYD appearances, & 9 bowl games in the last 10 years (I know the comparison is marginal at best, but you wanted to compare our baseball history to your football history). Our baseball history is not buried 45 years in the past. At this point, we are not vastly superior to the SEC, but even in a 10 year stretch considered to be average by most of our fan's standards, we still have a very good record. With the right coach, we have the potential to leap to the forefront of the SEC and the into the upper echelon of college baseball.

...and would offer up that in football, Alabama might be a slightly better/slightly worse job than LSU, Georgia, Florida, TN, Auburn, etc.

The rest of the SEC would be considered at least one tier below that.

In baseball, State's job (not their recent performance) is in that top tier in the conference. The SEC is, without a doubt, the best conference in the nation, so that puts State's job as a top tier job in the nation.

Fan support. It's a big deal and nobody in the SEC has better fan support than MSU. In 2002 we didn't make it to a regional, but we still packed 10K into our Saturday Super Bulldog game against UGA. Last year we have a pretty average season and end up at a national seed's regional. We end up winning and have only a few days notice to get SR tickets, yet still set the record for 2 day attendance. We also still own the record for regular season attendance by the way. This is all at a program that has severely underacheived this decade. Just imagine if MSU had the same level of success in terms of the regular season and hosting regionals as Ole Miss has had. Imgaine if it was even better than that. What would the attendance look like then?

This is no offense to Ole Miss. I've made known before and will do so again that I like Swayze Field. I think it's a great stadium and a great atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed watching games there, well except for the outcome when ya'll swept us in 2005. I still think on the field and in recruiting you guys passed us. However, we simply have the edge in fan support. You guys have made tremendous strides in this area, but we proved last June that we are still king in this conference. We also have top notch facilities and a long history of winning and being respected nationally. I'll tell you as I told that Clempson fan last June, don't be fooled by what you've seen from MSU this decade. We are capable of so much more and if we make the right hire you will get to see that first hand.

As far as the rest of the SEC goes, name me one team as well supported as MSU. LSU? Don't think so. Move them out of Baton Rouge and they wouldn't get near the average they have the past 15 years. Heck, they don't fit in as many as we do, they just average more to the midweek games due to being in BR. USC? Nope. UT? Nope. Florida? Nope. If we got the right coach we could really climb back to the upper echelon of the SEC, something you can't say of Ole Miss football.

If Byrne is as good as many on here have said, then he'll at least realize that paying for a top notch coach will pay off handsomely. And for the record, I never said that Ole Miss's baseball job was a better one. Anyway, most of these things are a function of economics and personal preference. Some might argue that the Texas job is the best in the country, I'd disagree because I'd rather be in the SEC.

That's not a common occurrence. I probably would have believed our program had slid from a national Top 10 program before the late rally last year and the SR hosting. To shatter SR attendance records on consecutive days the first time we hosted a SR shows me we have a Top 10 program, if not Top 5. This is a sleeping giant just waiting for the right man to bring it back to life.

I do know for a fact that at least one fan didn't go the Saturday game because he didn't have a ticket and they had said they were only going to sell 1,200 single game tickets and anybody else above that would be sent to the Hump to watch on TV.

we do have to worry about safety issues. When we put 13K in there we are making it really tight, we don't have near enough seats for everyone, and if something happened people would get trampled. Shove in another 2K and you've really got a serious issue. I know we did it in 1990, but this is a much different world we live in nowadays with respect to lawsuits and owner responsibility (the owner in this case being MSU). I rag on LT as much as anyone, but I see why he turned some away. This is the man that likes to pinch as many pennies as possible, he didn't turn down extra revenue out of spite.

their fan support is rabid, they are getting a nice new stadium, they have the best tradition in modern day college baseball and as much as I hate to say it, the resources there are better than most anywhere with the TOPS scholarship. I would consider it the number one job in college baseball. I just can't think of a better situation, particularly now that the LSU coach is no longer "the man that followed the man."

didn't Jim Wells at bama make a comment a couple of weeks ago about how MSU in baseball was like Notre Dame in football and UCLA in basketball. Thats a pretty strong statement. Rebel fans will ignore that comment and come back with their winning teams the past 4 years or so. Jackson radio was nauseating in 2005 with the comments about how ole miss had, "blown the doors off of MSUs program." State then beats UM in the title game in Hoover and makes Omaha 2 years later. I guess the program doesnt need doors to make Omaha.
