U mad over $176/year?

What about books and housing?

And am I missing something? I thought instate tuition is around 9K? I may be reading this wrong….

ETA: I think I am. Are you talking about getting money back from OM and USM? I was assuming you had already taken the grant out when you listed tuition. Which led me to be believe you were OOS which can’t be the case if you got the latter two grants.

I’m drunk

Another edit: my buddy had a 29 in 1999 and got lots of bar money back from his scholly

Are those the real MTAG / MESG amounts in 2023? Thats pathetic. Those don’t look any different than they were over 20 years ago when I was still in high school. Those amounts used to cover 80-90% of tuition, if not more. Now, it seems to be more like 30%

Looking at in-state / public schools struggling to provide enough aid, I’d start there.

Mine was the same way in '16. 30 ACT. State offered her by far the least scholarship money. It was going to cost us a crap ton out of pocket. She ended up at MC on a full ride and graduated with a 3.9

That’s pretty telling considering the cost of MC

I’d like to know why we are so stingy with our endowment. I know some funds are restricted. It it doesn’t do anyone any good to let $800 mill just sit there…well it’s good for the money manager.

Regardless if my kid gets $8k a year I will throw a parade.

When people say Keenum is killing academics, this is part of what they're referring to. Losing a whole lot of talented kids to competition
It’s a question for sure. I’d like to know the logic. I’m sure there is some (hopefully)

One thing I’ve learned, not everyone is stupid, and everything is done for a reason. I’d just like to know our reasons, ie our strategic plan…

We certainly will cover the difference, but I thought it was interesting that Ole Miss essentially is offering $10k more for the same, in-state student.

we are waiting to hear back from a couple of out of state schools. Speaking of which, South Alabama is blanketing Rankin County with billboards announcing no out of state tuition.

But we have gone from not considering Ole Miss to applying and getting $10k more in scholarships in a 6 week period. They are full on blitzing the transfer portal and high achieving in state students.

It’s also important to note that the comparisons vary bc state lumps scores into Groups. So a 28 actually gets you the same at both places. A 30 gets you $500 more at OM. But OM
Is far more aggressive once you hit a 32.

Yeah, be sure to know what the groups are. When I enrolled 25-29 was all the same (or maybe 27-29), then a big bump at 30. I made a 29 in 11th grade and never took it again. My parents didn’t know anything about college, the school counselor never spoke to me… I did all the paperwork on my own. I thought you applied and got what you got, didn’t know about the different scholarship levels. We didn’t really have much internet access so only info I had was what got mailed to me.

After I enrolled I learned that 1 more point would have made a HUGE difference… I was like, 17 me, that would have been nice to know

My kid was #1 in his class and had a 32. We paid nothing out of pocket at MSU.

Yeah also important to note that 615 and my numbers are just the auto scholarships based on ACT. It doesn’t include other opportunities.

I mean I have no idea but maybe we are getting a lot of higher act scores so the higher scholarships are going to higher scores

No. But there are scores where it’s roughly the same. They increase theirs at every act score. We group ours. So a 27 gets the same as a 29.

but At 32 and above OM offers more than us. It’s out there on the internet.

I’m saying when you factor in other scholarships besides just the automatic ACT ones

Sure. I’m sure that cuts both ways too. Every school offers other scholarships.
My main point was replying to this

sounds like we aren’t really that much different than them and we might be a little better than them when it comes to non ACT

we also might have more applicants with higher ACT scores

But what I’m positive of is that msu and Keenun didn’t do is wake up and think “we don’t want 615 dawgs kids at MSU”.

We’re OOS and my daughter’s GPA/SAT Score/Class Rank qualify her for around $18K/yr according to MSU’s website and that doesn’t include her getting OOS tuition waived because I’m an alum.

Is that a thing? I thought that was pretty much a misconception. But based off ACT/SAT scores they basically get it offset.

Can’t you just get more students from overseas and send the local Mississippians to cheaper schools that are overseas but offer online courses? I mean isn’t that what we’ve kinda been doing since the late 90s?
it probably seemed like a good idea at the time but the fallout consequences always rear their ugly heads later on down the line.

I know two twin sisters who never have been apart, but one went to Ole Miss and the other one to state. Two different majors. State offered more money for one sister based on her major than Ole Miss and Ole Miss offered the other sister more money than state for hers.

I told my two kids if they want me to pay, they are going to Community College for two years and save money on courses. I would also pay for the last two year if they did that. If they go to 4 years first, they are on their own.

When I left for college, my mom gave me a 20-dollar bill and waved goodbye. I paid for my own college.

My daughter made money going to MSU after her Freshman year. She only made a 27 on her ACT, so we had to pay some her Freshman year, but she had a 4.0 after 2 semesters and Soph - Senior years she made money going to school. She “worked” 20 hours a week at one of the departments on campus while earning her Masters. Basically she was paid to study

An OOS student doesn't receive instate tuition because a parent is an alum and then get $18k in OOS merit incentive.

Scholarship amounts are getting cut despite the fact that every year we break the fundraising record, which we set the previous year. And the press releases always state how that money will help fund scholarships. I volunteer as a Scoutmaster and can tell you, as a fact, that the scholarship for being an Eagle Scout or getting Girl Scout Gold Award was reduced this past year. MSU used to give $6000 over four years. It was cut down to $2000 for just your freshman year. Meanwhile, Ole Miss is at $6000 over four years and USM is $8000 over four years. So, as it turns out, we value community service, civic duty, and leadership less than Ole Miss and USM. How's that for "Taking Care of What Matter."

One piece of caution on that…

A lot of ACT based scholarships are for incoming freshmen only and don’t apply to transfer students, at least that was my experience.

If they do go the JUCO Route, you might want to point them in the direction of Phi Theta Kappa and offer to cover their membership fees.

Membership and involvement in it will help them - and you - when it comes to paying for the last two years.

Others here can also give advice.
