Listening to discussion re Prime Time going to Univ Colorado as HC. he of course had a short stint at Jackson State, but otherwise, he has no coaching experience. What do you expect from an ex-player who becomes a HC and has no HC experience or for that matter no coaching experience at all?

I think Deion coached his sons Pop Warner for years, then at his sons High school. Similarly here in SoFla few years ago we had a group of former players names you all know, coach their sons in high school at American Heritage-funny trend. Difference is Deion went onto JSU with a low bar set and I think the coaches he inherited and brought on ran things. He observed, made decisions as he went through the process and used his former experiences as a player to make an impact.

With that said, He‘s playing manager not coach…the real question is did he hire good coaches to run each unit. He was smart in selecting Colorado since they have an incredibly low standard like JSU did so if he can win 4-5 games this fall he looks brilliant! Then he may be able to recruit a Top 10 class and win 7 games in 24‘ and so on…it will be interesting. I don’t think Deion will meddle with his Coordinators this year When it comes to making in game adjustments. Yes he will authorize going for it on Fourth down or when to punt etc…I think the first two years his coaches will be more impactful during the games.

On a separate note a correlation I find interesting with regards to former players coaching is if they are great I.e. pro bowlers, all pro, HOFers coaching I don’t think it works even in Basketball and/or Baseball. I can only think of one all time great super star coaching who was successful. Can u guess who?

He has more experience than Jeff Saturday. A guy that went from OL to a bad ESPN analyst to HC of the Colts.

I think, some times, that it is due to the ex-player being so good, they don't have a category for less than that. Not every player can do the things that superstars can do.

As for an example? Joe Torre was a good manager.

100%…and Torre was an MVP winner if I recall…funny when people bring up Lavar to be LB coach…LA is probably my favorite player and being a defensive coach I would probably let him roam as he did 90% of the time…but he probably doesn’t know hot to teach the proper techniques, how to properly shed a blocker, how to teach what a cross key is etc…not to mention the discipline to rep rep rep…

Phil Jackson? He had a pretty impressive NBA playing career. Clearly one of the top 5 coaches of all time too.

There are currently five who have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both an NBA player and an NBA coach — Bill Russell, Bill Sharman, Tom Heinsohn, John Wooden, and Lenny Wilkins

Wooden never played or coached in the NBA. The Naismith includes players and coaches from both professional and college ranks.

Thanks for the edit. Paste was off in that regard, but 3x All American at Purdue. NBA didn't start till 1946. Still has to be listed as both an amazing player, and coach.

I was assuming Modern day but even with that still very few gentleman, and I did mention star type players…also a handful inherited some great teams….Bird didn’t have any of that…Ditka? I think a little overrated as a coach. Russell, Berra inherited great teams they were part of…very few…hell not even any great position coaches..who Norton? Singletary was ok as a coach..
