I never heard anyone ever say Maryland was leading, maybe Miami was second in the guys mind. These Oregon people are a little different.

Recruiting on relationships and character, the way Beamer does, gets you involved with recruits where money is not the key factor and those recruits less likely to transfer when money is waved around.
The way the Harbor family handled recruiting obviously showed they were more concerned about their son than money!

If that means different from "us", we need to keep them that way.

Honest question. If he's right, what's the big deal? There's been a lot of angst and consternation that our NIL game sucks and we can't compete with anyone. Then someone comes out and says we beat Oregon/Nike and we crap on that too. There were other reports that we had the biggest NIL package on the table heading into the weekend. I don't think we have a money problem. I think we have an engagement problem. And it appears that is being corrected. If this guy is right, it's a huge positive for us.

If you read their messages and their take on college football, it just comes off a little off to me, hard to describe. I don't mind differing opinions, and am used to plenty from reading what SEC fan bases say.

I thought they were in great shape as they have a great track program and stadium and understood what they had to offer, and posted my opinion it would come down to South Carolina and them.

They did not agree form a overall standpoint and seemed quite shocked, still shocked, LOL

We don't get somebody, it happens, we face great competition, for great players, especially for a guy across the country, we move on, the title of this thread seems correct.

Whatever the case, it's silly to think we outbid Oregon. IF the recruiting process comes down to a bidding war between us and Oregon, we lose. Every time.

I posit that it was Mama. Mama was the deciding factor.

All of our people together don't trump Phil Knight. Harbor could have gotten a Nike commercial easier than Bryce Young from Alabama got that Dr. Pepper commercial. Let's can this horse crap right now.
Hard to imagine anyone, let alone us outbidding Oregon. Let's get real.

USC doesn’t have a single booster with Phil Knight NIKE money. Harbor’s Mom didn’t make the OV to Oregon, that should tell everyone how enthusiastic she was about him playing across country. Beamer’s been recruiting Harbor since his days at Oklahoma. He had the longest, and best relationship with Harbor and his family of any of the other coaches/schools. That’s why Harbor is coming here!

It's not always about who has the most absolute money. That's a very surface-level analysis. Maybe it's about what a particular player is worth to a particular team. Harbor is, what, our #1 or #2 guy in the is class? Where would he have fallen in Oregon's class? Or maybe it wasn't about NIL promises at all. With Harbor's obvious confidence, maybe he figures that a super-star athlete in the SEC will do better in the long run than one in what will be a significantly diluted PAC-12 once the L.A. teams depart. Or maybe after visiting Eugene, he couldn't see himself living there for several years. Maybe Columbia felt more like home. It's certainly a lot closer to his home. There are hundreds of factors that go into a decision like this, of which NIL promises would be just one. Or at least, that's the way it should be for anyone with a head on their shoulders and a family with some collective sense (and his family certainly appears to have that).

Mama Harbor chose Shane to mentor her son long ago - just had to get Nyck past all the eye candy of the last whirlwind visit and back to the kitchen table with mama on the big day.

It's hard to imagine because it's not possible.
Don’t have to outbid them. Just have to be in the ballpark so relationships make up the diff. With some kids, it will just be about the $. With some, they’ll take less if they have that higher level of a relationship and comfort. We may not have outbid them, but we got close enough for the relationship with our staff equalized it. It’s not like Beamers relationship is the only reason he’s coming here.
