Crazy. I read that gas lines underground possibly caught fire and manhole covers were blowing off.

What’s the over/under on the I-95 lane closures? I’ll take the over if it’s 6 months.

It’s 95 in the northeast corridor so northeast of the city. Further south to Chester and Delaware is unaffected

Something similar happened in Atlanta in 2017 and they finished the rebuild in 44 days. With PennDOT, I predict 44 months. That's coming from someone with a lot of friends that are PennDOT employees.

All understood-was referencing the drive around for people like me who travel to NYC and Newark for work. When I have work up there I usually use PHL. Thank you

Gas lines under the city? No worries, Pa can always lean on Centrala
About 5000 gallons of gasoline were suspected of leaking into the sewer system during the truck fire. That was why manhole covers were blowing off. Most communities that have gas heat have gas lines running underground.

Something seems really odd about this - why was a gasoline tanker under the overpass and how did it catch fire. Strange

the area of the fire is the Cottman Ave exit, where northbound traffic exits from the right lane and curves left under the raised section of I95 and continues parallel toward Torresdale and Frankford Aves. The driver of the tanker likely took the exit with too much speed and/or d didn’t break in time before spilling over under the highway.

Any time a gasoline tanker catches fire it is a little odd. It's not unheard of, but there are a lot of safety measures built into the tankers to prevent fires.

As for the location, it's not that odd. I-95 in many parts of Philadelphia (not all) is an elevated highway, as when it was built it cut right through existing neighborhoods and businesses. Elevating the highway enabled the majority of the existing neighborhoods and businesses (and existing roads) to stay in place, and not be cut off by the highway. Most (again, not all) of the exits from the elevated portions of the highway go down to street level, and then curve under the elevated portion of the highway.

In this specific situation, the tanker seems to have exited from northbound I-95 at Cottman Avenue, and then stopped due to it being on fire under the elevated highway. The northbound portion of the elevated highway directly over the exit ramp collapsed onto the exit ramp. The exit ramp also goes under the southbound portion of the elevated highway. The southbound portion of the elevated highway did not collapse, but the initial belief is that the metal supports were compromised and as such can not handle daily traffic. As such, the southbound portion of I-95 at this location is also closed, while the engineers examine the supports.

Where's the driver of the truck? Thought reports mentioned no casualties.
He can certainly explain the time line of this accident.

If everyone starts using all the bridges that cross the Delaware River from NJ/PA it will be complete chaos on Fridays with beach traffic and people trying to get to the shore as well as rush hour traffic.
