why not give your offense a chance? That play was doomed from the snap.

It was picked up after it was determined that the receiver was already down, but can someone tell my in the world it is illegal to bat a live ball that is laying on the field one direction or another? I understand why it's illegal to fumble a ball forward on offense, but it makes no sense at all to me as to why a live ball can't be knocked one direction or another. It's a heads up play and no matter which direction you hit it, you stand a chance to allow the other team to regain possession if you don't cover it up, so again, why is it illegal?

Batting a Loose Ball
ARTICLE 1. a. While a pass is in flight, any player eligible to touch the ball
may bat it in any direction (Exception: Rule 9-4-2).
b. Any player may block a scrimmage kick in the field of play or the end
zone.
c. No player shall bat other loose balls forward in the field of play or in any
direction if the ball is in the end zone (Rule 2-2-3-a) (Exception: Rule
6-3-11) (A.R. 6-3-11-I, A.R. 9-4-1-I-XI and A.R. 10-2-2-IV).
PENALTY-15 yards from the basic spot and loss of down if the loss
of down is not in conflict with other rules [S31 and S9]
[Exception: No loss of down if the foul occurs when a legal
scrimmage kick is beyond the neutral zone (Rules 10-2-2-c,
d, e and f)].
