I know Memphis has always been full of State fans, students, and grads

but this is the first time I've been back in the summer in 3 years for my job and I can't drive on the road for 5 seconds without seeing MSU logos and stickers everywhere. All I could figure is that State is making a killing in the germantown/collierville area with scholarships and what not. I'm sure the recent on the field success helps too.

It is nice to see the UT and UM logos not as prevalent in the Memphis/surrounding areas. Southaven is flowing with State plates, logos, etc.

they graduate less than us, their turnover is high and damn near 50% of their students are from out of state. Most, if they graduate, go back to texas and georgia. They are going to have a huge issue over the next decade with this. It is already starting.</p>

as they tend to make more money, which they can then give back. Then again, I'm one of those, so maybe I'm biased

Live in germantown and work in midtown. Been in the area for 4 years and State swag has never been this prevelant. It's everywhere. I know the State recruiters for TN and Shelby county personally, and parents and kids both absolutely love them. We're kicking everybody else's *** in recruiting kids from affluent areas in Shelby county. Affluent families sending their kids to the jewel = money in the coffers.

including 4 out of their top 5% percentile (top 20), including valedvictorian.

that, to me, is more impressive than the sheer number of graduating seniors going to State. we're not only getting numbers, we're getting the top students, too. i was at their graduation and msu was in good company when listening to where the top 20 were going... the likes of princeton, stanford, harvard, etc...

to a UM friend. Their current model will kill them long term. Their politicalinfluencewill continue to decline as their percentage of the votingpopulousshrinks. For every 1000 Mississippi born students wegraduate, they graduate about 550, and many of the 550 are grad students from UMMC and UM Law that did not get their undergrad at UM, and everyone knows your loyalties lie where you got your undergrad degrees.

my company is doing a new website for a local private school (FACS). Small school but I was told 15 of the 75 seniors are heading to State.

aGain I'll say: Construction on the endzone should start the day after the 2011 season ends just for students alone much less people on the waiting list to get season tickets.

has a lot to do with the recent influx of Memphis high school grads choosing state. The Tennessee Hope (Lottery) scholarship has caused UT and MTSU to raise their ACT entrance scores and G.P.A standards because their enrollment has gone up drastically in the last 5 years or so. I know a kid who got a 26 on his ACT, had a decent G.P.A and didn't get in to UT. State offered him free out of state tuition after a campus visit and it was done. He also loved the dorms and for some reason his mom told me she thinks he"ll get in to less trouble in Starkville as opposed to Knoxville. I kept my mouth shut.

and how do they compare to UM, USM, and nearby schools?

Economically, it makes sense for them. I think Memphis residents can qualify for full rides or other good scholarships. Their other options are either too far away or too expensive.

UM is the only other reasonable alternative, but as of a year ago, State was much less expensive after scholarships. That may have been corrected since then.

thats your argument that Memphis is out of state? Memphis is an extension of OB, Southaven and Hernando. There are more state and um folk there than UT, UM and VANDY combined.

Im sure you do love that you guys have 50% out of staters...good, that is awesome, problem is they leave and dont come back. Many dont ever graduate. Sure, its cool to be the 2nd choice for those that cant get into uga or ut, and im being serious when i say that, but it is going to hurt you guys with donations to academics and athletics but more importantly folks that come back routinely...no matter what. Those folks, once they leave, dont have the same love affair with UM as they do when they are diehard students. They lose interest and dont return. The backbone are the locals. They are the ones that typically grew up a fan and will come back no matter what. When you dont have nearly as many of them, it will catch up with you. It is already starting to do so.

Ole Miss won't unless it's a 30, I believe. It's been a good recruiting tool for State in Memphis for sure recently.

last year, State was the school of choice - rumor was that State was throwing money at kids with high ACTs. Not so much this year. It seems that Arkansas is the school of choice given a lower ACT for waiver of out-of-state (along with the ability to super score).

That being said I agree that you're seeing alot more MSU bling in east Shelby County. I attribute it toWINNING!

but within the city limits it's far
and away Memphis Tiger (Basketball) fans. UT Football 2nd, but you"ll
see more Memphis gear/ stickers/ signs around town than UT. Even in the
suburbs, Ole Miss and State representation rivals UT.

I still always saw a ton more UT than state and OM combined. Not that there aren't plenty of State and OM folks, but we'd each have one watch party for football games and they would have every other bar in town. That's one thing I don't miss about Memphis, all that ugly-*** orange.
