If you had to choose. Ki-Jana or Saquon?

Carter had more "gears" than any back I've ever
Seen. No angle from a defender ever seemed good enough. Not to mention his strength and power. Better than Barkley? Who knows. Different Era. Different teams. Different coaches. Both terrific. I'll take either.

Carter was the tougher runner. Barkley was the more skillful runner. Carter ran in between the tackles without hesitation. In open space Barkley was impressive.

I firmly believe that in 1994 Penn State would have beaten Nebraska for the National Championship, probably by the same score 38-20. If that game was played and Carter delivered the same performance this comparison would not be close. JMHO

Actually he wouldn’t have because he would have sat most of all second half’s just like Carter did.
If he had Joe as coach he would have, with Franklin he wouldn't have. 21 points for Joe inflates to the Franklin 40. Franklin would have stroked out to chunk play heaven

Tough choice. Saquon was easily the better receiver. However, I believe Ki-Jana Carter was the better runner because he was more physical and tougher for opposing teams to tackle. I still get goose bumps every time I watch Ki-Jana smoke Oregon for an 83 yard TD on the first PSU offensive play of the 1995 Rose Bowl.

By the way, I’m somewhere in that mob in the end zone where he ended up after that run, next to the band.

Nebraska was one dimensional. Think we would have beaten them more that 38-20.

Not to be contrarian, but how much he sat wouldn't impact YPC. Total yards yes, but YPC wouldn't be impacted by sitting the bench.

Carters 1994 ypc is ranked in the top 20 all time for NCAA.

Actually it would have. Imagine Carter running free in second half with tired defenses. Wow!!

Interesting topic and good reasoning behind all the opinions shared. The '93-'94 vs. '16+ OLine argument is interesting. Good conversation.

Having followed PSU football since the early 60s(!), I can say that we PSU fans are extremely fortunate to have watched far more than our share of outstanding running backs. Those greats brought varying levels of skill to the position, which helped PSU win games in a variety of ways - power, finese, speed, receiving skill, etc.

I'm not one who likes to pick a "best ever" anyway for my favorite teams, especially when different eras are involved. The nuance is too fine in most cases. The joy the athlete brought to my fandom is generally through the roof. My personal #1 podium has room for lots of them to share the spotlight.

I'm sure for nearly all of us on the BWI boards, we feel lucky to have cheered for so many great RBs, LBs, DL, OL, DBs, QBs, WRs, Ks, Coaches.... we are fans of decades-long elite talents and results. Here's to it continuing for a long time.

based solely on college. I take Ki-Jana.
I agree. My younger sister was in the process of getting her MBA in 1994 so I came to a couple of home games and sat in the student section. One game we were close to the field and Carter on a long TD run went flying by pretty close to where we were. I have never seen thick legs like that on anyone ever. So much so that the following spring I attended the Blue White game with my dad and that was the day of the NFL draft. when it was announced Carter had been drafted by the Bengals I told my dad he's going to have a knee injury on that astroturf remembering what I had seen. Unfortunately I was correct.

For those that didn't see him or for those that need a reminder, here's 15 minutes of KJC highlights.

The run against Minnesota at about the 1:40 mark was the run I remember seeing and thinking WOW...this year is gonna be special

You think they have him at the LOS but he bounces it outside. Then you think they have him for about a 10 yard gain. Then, the 5 defenders in front of him are suddenly behind him. Almost in the blink of an eye.

Someone in this thread mentioned him having so many "gears" and that play really showcases that.

It's nice seeing all those runs against tO$U during our Homecoming game! Imagine the balls it took to schedule Homecoming against Ohio State! Joe knew exactly what he had going into that season. I also love the way he politely hands the ball to the official.

Whoo boy talk about a "Sophies Choice"...I would need to see Barkley behind the '94 line and Ki-Jana behind the 2016 line. As much as I loved watching Kijana run I think Barkley wins this.
Barkley probably goes over 2,500 yards with that '94 OL I'm thinking like Barry Sanders type numbers from 1988.

I think my favourite run of his was at the 1:35 mark against Minny in the dome. The speed he demonstrates to get to the corner and house it is incredible.

Ooh. I mean to mention that earlier. I loved how he [Carter] just hands the ball to the official. I wish they still did that

The run against Minnesota where the announcer was yelling “ridiculous!” Was Paul Alexander when he was at WTAJ-10 Altoona. WTAJ broadcast the game themselves because the game was set to be untelevised .Paul Alexander did play by play. He was pissed that the station had not yet come back from commercial during the touchdown run. I remember it like yesterday, they came back from commercial and announced Psu just scored a touchdown

To be fair, lets add a snippet of SB's greatest hits. Both guys were very special talents. I think KC had raw power and speed. SB had speed and unbelievable shiftiness.

I probably alter my decision each time I watch either of them
