In PSU FB History what recruit did you think was a lock that never panned out?

I was sure Justin Shorter was the next great thing. As far as level of disappointment in the progress of a player, Rasheed Walker is second. He has so much potential and never lived up to it, despite being a productive member of the team for three years. He should have been elite.

Eric Renkey.
AJ Wallace
Hackenberg is my gut response but with some thought, Wallace may be my better answer. Got a little worse every year from his freshman year on. Is thought he had star written all over him.

As far as I can remember he was the only 5 star DB that Joe ever recruited.

Eric Renkeys recruitment was a bitter battle with Pitt abd I think one other school. Not only did he not do anything on the field he was barely eligible -and he was a smart kid. He finished out ok but not what what he could have been if he applied himself earlier in his career. On and off the field.

Anyone recall a kid from the mid-80's named Eric Wainwright from Jersey?

This kid was a real bulldozer and thought to be Earl Campbell 2.0! I am not sure if he had ever played a down at PSU.

Yes. He got redshirted his freshman year and then transferred to Delaware State along with another teammate. He was actually a nice kid. Turned down Nebraska for Penn State

Wide ranging answers, but no Pat Devlin references so far.

I’m not sure how you could call Devlin a bust? He never was given an opportunity at PSU which grinds my gears a bit, especially at Iowa in ‘08 after he led them for the game winning drivie the previous week in Columbus. DC17 clearly wasn’t right in the Iowa game, but Devlin was never put in the game. It apparently grinded Devlin’s gears as well because he transferred and eventually made the NFL for a few years.

In the legendary '91 we had two USA Today All-Americans Stephen Pitts and an offensive lineman from Ohio named Scott Stratton. Pitts had a solid career but could never emerge from Carter's shadow. Stratton was passed by another lineman from Ohio in the same class named Jeff Hartings.

I often wonder what could've been with Conestoga Valley's Corey Jones especially if he a QB. That kid was FAST! He was the second-ranked receiver in the country his senior year behind some Randy Moss guy who I heard was okay.
