In PSU FB History what recruit did you think was a lock that never panned out?

Maybe you are right. On the other hand, he was the consensus No 1 player in the country when he was recruited. He certainly didn’t play at that level at PSU.
I would agree but he only really started his senior year, If the OP's intention is to point out impact at PSU, he really had none. However his talent and presumably given a shot at the pros--- he made the most of it

I was excited for Chris Bell from the 2006 class (rated 0.9555 in composite and a top-10 WR), but he never panned.

There are some recruits that were elite prospects but “only” good college players. But not a whole lot of elite prospects that were total busts.

Hazelton, Bell, Logan El, Redd, and Holler would fit the bill as busts.

Austin Scott, Slade, Wade, and Morelli fit as seriously underperforming.

we seem to have more luck with 3 stars that evolve into great players like Barkley, Poz, etc.

Mike Cartwright, running back from Maryland in mid 70’s. I don’t know what the expectations were for him because there was no recruiting news in those days but I had great hopes for him. He was 6’2” with a best in show body. In an era when the fastest player would be a wide receiver who ran a 4.5, he ran a reported 4.34. But he was always injured. The highlight of his career was a run in the Blue White game where he cranked up the speed, turned the corner and made 8 yards. The whole stadium went ’Ooooooooh’.

I was sure Justin Shorter was the next great thing. As far as level of disappointment in the progress of a player, Rasheed Walker is second. He has so much potential and never lived up to it, despite being a productive member of the team for three years. He should have been elite.
I gotta think, actually, a year earlier: Lamont Wade. #1 in that class, basically a 5-star. I know that he did make it through 4 years at Penn State, and started. Walker still has a crack at the NFL. Shorter not yet done. Wade's personal issues among teammates (if the stories are accurate), and how he went undrafted, tried out for the 'hometown' Steelers. Then was cut in August '21.

Of course, I think officially Hackenberg is still the highest-ranked commit PSU basically has had, tied w/ Parsons. Sigh....

OT back in the 80s or 90s was PA Player of the year. Never played a down for PSU; weight problem; loved the buffet line more than football. Players was named Hollor (sp).

Zac Wasserman... Was the Los Angeles Daily News High School POY. I remember seeing his offer sheet and saying... Man we just hit the jackpot!
That is a tough one because he didn't stay. He was only at PSU for his true freshman year. He never did anything after he left but you never know how things change.

Anyone remember Troy Davis? This was too early in my PSU career to know of his recruiting rankings but I thought he was supposed to be very good.
