The Big Ten has only admitted universities that are AAU member institutions. Nebraska was a member of the AAU when it was admitted in 2010 but their status was terminated in 2011.

There were always two fallacies about Big Ten expansion. One, any new member MUST be AAU. Two, any new member MUST be in a state which borders the current conference footprint. Neither has ever been true but some people seemed to think they were laws of nature or at the very least requirements written in the conference bylaws. And even if they were in the bylaws (which they aren't), the bylaws could be changed to make it happen.
