Included are Miami and ND joining ... assume at a minimum these schools are covering all their bases or could it be more with quiet talks going on behind the scenes ...

The Big Ten does not require AAU membership (see Nebraska) and it offered ND years ago. It's not about academics. it's about $$$$$$$$$$$$.
Correct ... Albeit weird some news stories say it's required others not but the big 10 wants universities to be members and Nebraska was a member when they were admitted to the big 10 below is from a Yahoo news story
....

The Big Ten has only admitted universities that are AAU member institutions. Nebraska was a member of the AAU when it was admitted in 2010 but their status was terminated in 2011.

The process of ejecting Nebraska from the AAU took place over a decade and everyone knew it was happening well before it became formalized in 2011. Wisconsin and Michigan reportedly voted to throw them out.

Big Ten invited ND to join in 1999. Guess they must have figured that eventually ND would be invited into the AAU.

There were always two fallacies about Big Ten expansion. One, any new member MUST be AAU. Two, any new member MUST be in a state which borders the current conference footprint. Neither has ever been true but some people seemed to think they were laws of nature or at the very least requirements written in the conference bylaws. And even if they were in the bylaws (which they aren't), the bylaws could be changed to make it happen. Those things were always called "preferences" but were thrown out the window a decade ago.

1. Clubs are often political. Membership, or lack thereof, should not be taken at face value when assessing quality.

2. Academics have no borders.

See? Academics come first in the b1g.
