Interesting situation for Saquon.

Giants want to re-sign both Saquon and QB Daniel (Lunkhead) Jones. Cap management strategy was to sing Jones to a long term deal and franchise tag Barkley. Tag deadline is tomorrow.

Fly in the ointment is that Jones wants $45mm. That's Mahomes territory. Causing the Giants to swallow hard.

So what's to be done? They can tag Jones at about $35mm for one year and sign Barkley to a long-term deal at around $15mm p.a. That has some appeal, but long-term deals for RBs haven't had the habit of working out (Exhibit A is one Mr. E Elliott). Given what I think of Jones, which should be apparent by the appellation I've bestowed on him, I'd go with this.

why pay SB $15mm per yr when you can get the same for less? It looks to me Pollard will get tagged in Dallas at $10mil, Jacobs for the raiders most likely gets tagged as well. Mile Sanders will be out there looking of something, and there's no way the Eagles give him $15mil, imo. So when the MS hits f/a the Giants can probably sign him for $6-$7 or less. Or go to the draft and get another one. Life of an NFL RB no way I pay them.

Jones is delusional if he thinks he's worth that much... but then well Watson...SMH. The Brown's cant just stick to ruining their own franchise, now they are branching out.

Maybe the Giants can sign Saquon for less if the figures you cite is the market for RBs.

Word is that no one is interested in Jones at $45mm. But, it's the NFL and there is at least one idiot out there.

There are FA QBs as good or better than Lunkhead that the Giants could sign for less. Ordinarily, my dislike for the Giants is such that I'd wish a 10 year, $50mm per Jones contract on them. But, I like Saquon and Daboll, so I hope they look elsewhere, and the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets fulfill Lunkhead's wishes.

  • Quarterback
    $32.45 million
  • Running Back
    $10.10 million
Tag Jones, and do your best with SB. The way Zeke and with CM always being hurt, do you really need to pay the RB?

I do not watch a ton of NFL football but I don't see how anyone can think Daniel Jones is the guy to give a long term big money deal to. I guess the fact that the Giants are considering it is a testament to the dearth of good QBs in the NFL. This is why it does not surprise me that Levis is as coveted as he appears to be. IMO it is not so much that Will is a can't miss franchise QB, but more so that there are very few of them currently in the NFL and every team that does not have one of those guys is desperate to find one.

tag jones and make him prove it for another year. make sure this year wasn't a product of Daboll and he ACTUALLY progressed. gonna be interesting to see how teams prepare for him now that he's got a full year of tape on him in the new offense.

sign SB to a 3-4 year deal (he's already proven he's got a much better work ethic than zeke)

Last season was absolutely a product of Daboll coaching. Jones has considerable athletic ability, but can't read a defense worth spit. Daboll made it easy on him by concentrating on short passing routes so that Jones's meager brain wouldn't overheat.

it looks like a good chance Derrick Henry will be on the market as well....

Henry is due a base salary of $10.5 million this season, none of which is guaranteed. If the Titans were to trade him, they’d save $6.3 million on their salary cap in 2023.

The 29-year-old Henry was the NFL’s offensive player of the year in 2020. He has led the NFL in rushing yards twice and led the NFL in carries three times, including last season. But his yards per carry average dropped a full yard from 5.4 in 2020 to 4.4 in 2022.

The Titans earned the AFC No. 1 seed in 2021, but last year they acted more like a rebuilding team by trading wide receiver A.J. Brown, and this year they’re continuing to shed expensive players. Henry might be the next to go.

You make a very good point. The QB play in the NFL, outside of about 4 or 5, is pretty bad.

GrimReaper-Is that verified that Jones wants $45 million per year? Ridiculous. Who the heck is advising him! I think he had a good year, did much better than expected, but he is not in the top tier of QBs. Problem is that it is easier to replace a RB than a QB. I would put franchise tag on Jones and try to get a deal with Saquan. Do not know what Saquan is asking for him but he has said publicly that he is not asking to be the top paid running back. I think too often NFL players (who unlike baseball players rarely have guaranteed deals) demand huge multi-year deals and get cut in the middle for salary cap purposes. RBs often have a limited shelf life and hopefully Barkley is realistic that he is a heck of a NFL player but was not the top RB this year and has an injury history. Being a NFL GM and hearing demands like Jones must really stink. Sure do not think any other NFL team is going to offer Jones near $45 million.

Verified? No, Daniel Jones hasn't called me to confirm the number. But, I've read $45mm and I've read $48mm. I've also read that the Giants and his agents, AthletesFirst, have narrowed the gap, whatever that means. So the Giants overpay Jones nd they have no money for WRs, of which they have none. Daboll is a good coach, but he can't dink and dunk forever.

And Jones won’t be able to keep running like he did this past season. He won’t last.

Jones should get $10 mil and make up the rest through NIL.

I’ve just been informed that’s not how it works in the NFL.

Yes, believe it or not, NFL players are compensated for use of their name, image, and likeness.

Who could read anything behind the line he’s played with his entire career?
Yeah, but if a QB can't find an open receiver, there are at least three alternatives better than throwing an interception.

Much different supporting cast, but I get your point.

BTW, it’s skadoosh:
