First question - yes. I think this would have happened to a few others if not for easier schedules (like SMU).

As far as programs like us - of course. You just have to get the basics right, and have a plan.

One would hope there is a better way, but it will still take a good amount of $$$ to compete. The blue bloods have made it that way, and will continue to do so. The programs that demand titles will put more effort and $$$ into their programs.

Those blue blood programs have one thing in common. At one time, they found the right coach, held onto him for a long period of time, which created a recruiting pipeline, won a lot of games and maybe a title or 2 along the way. Similar to how we evolved with baseball and Polk. Now they just maintain that program and standard of winning.

I would love for us to find that coach and create a winning program that can compete for titles. It's so much harder to do now. There are so many blue bloods in our own conference now to even compete for a conference title.

Without long term contracts of some sort we'll never compete for the playoffs. We have to be able to find value and lock them in or the big boys will come every year and pick off our top talent, not all of it but enough to keep us down. Expanding the roster limit just makes things worse for teams like ours and even worse for g5.

Even ole miss with all their nil got Judkins snatched away.

oh and first we need real coaches who can develop players. Our current strategy of having all our players look lost is one way to keep teams from poaching them I guess.

I think we will need a decade's worth of playoffs to see if it is possible for a non-blue blood to break through and actually win the dang thing. The parity shown this year may be a start. BUT, for a non-blue blood to break through it is going to take everything to go right.

All you have to do is look at the defending national champs. They don't have a QB and have flirted with .500 all season. Now they have pledged to throw record money at the QB position and NIL overall to make sure it doesn't happen again. Will it work? Winning a natty is hard regardless, is throwing $50mm at year at it worth the gamble?

Mississippi's fate was sealed, and nobody wanted to admit it then, when they failed to retain Judkins and told everybody that Bentley and running it back with Parrish was going to be the answer. Now, those 2 guys didn't even combine for 1000 yards. It's hard to be a contender when you don't have a workhorse in the backfield that you can depend on to get the tough yards.

Their losses are to 4-7 Kentucky, 6-5 Florida, and 7-4 LSU. They were favored by 15.5 against KY, 11.5 against Florida, and 3.5 against LSU.

The KY and Florida losses are bad ones. They were absolutely dominated at the LOS in all three of their losses. They didn't "almost" do anything this year. It kinda pisses me off that we're so bad because if we were competent up front they'd be relatively easy pickings.

I wouldn't disagree with either of your points. I was just speaking to the original question of the viability of pay for play teams. Basically Ole Miss went that route and got pretty dang close to getting what they wanted. Of course they didn't, but they wouldn't have even been in the position without that DL etc that they paid for.

I think that regardless of the "rules" around how CFB operates, it still requires a lot of things to go your way to end up at the top. If OM really spent $15MM and they don't even make the playoff, then they are for sure an example of how you can waste a lot of money in the NIL age and not achieve anything of merit.
