I heard on KSR today the tweet that Derrick made about Jasper. I understand a family member being upset at playing time, and fans saying bad things. We all love our family members and being involved in sports all my life, and my sons lives probably thought my kids were alot better than they actually were as well. Answer me this? What game pointed out to anyone that Jasper was ready this year to guard and facilitate as a point guard at the power four level? He was isolated and scored on at will. He literally fell down bringing the ball up the court without anyone guarding him in the Iowa state game. Most games, against strong guards he was unplayable. Coach Pope and his staff deserve alot of criticism this year, and i mean alot. Not playing Jasper is one item they deserve zero criticism for. The kid is not ready without another 20 pounds of muscle to play at the high D1 level. I also throw out there that the kid made a lot of money and drove a Tesla. So this makes him a pro, and i am sorry if the fans were harsh but he did deserve some criticism for his play this year.

By all accounts the Johnson's are wonderful folks. They are just standing up for their loved one and that is admirable. Not everyone is cut out to be a high level basketball player, and im sorry to tell them but until Jasper gets a lot bigger and strong than he will go into the pile that my family goes into; Pretty good players that were just too small to play at that level. Except we didnt get a ton of money and a Tesla for this!

JJ better think long and hard about his future.

He's not going to a power 5 school and get serious minutes next year, and at least under Pope he's at a blueblood, making money and has the facilities and ability to improve his game to be a starter down the road. He better not confuse the fact that he's at Kentucky, it means he'd also be a Jawhawk, a Spartan or Gator

he could end up being a journeyman college player finishing out his career at a school like Tennessee Tech while Unc lights up social media along the way.

Why is the uncle THIS invested? If I was his uncle I would tell him the truth. "You need to attack the weight room all summer and work on your ball handling skills. You aren't good enough right now, you have to get better." Pretty clear they had "one and done" delusions for him and reality has set in that he needs A LOT of work and they can't accept it.

Also nice cheap shot at another UK legacy family and more than likely Coach Rupp regarding "older people in my community not rocking with UK". A.k.a. all the BS said about Rupp that has been debunked a million times if he bothered to do his research. Amazing how that label gets stuck to us but Alabama, Mississippi, and all of the SEC schools besides Vandy (credit where credit is due) who now gladly pretend it was all big bad Kentucky's fault are free from criticism despite their lunacy being the reason why Rupp wasn't allowed to bring Unseld in like he wanted to (he couldn't promise that he would be able to keep him safe from the future Nate Oats and Nick Saban supporters of the world). Looking at their teams now you'd never believe they ever had a problem with it.

Johnson's family was also real tight with Vince Marrow. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Loserville, the uncle will definitely be pushing for it.

Jasper was also playing out of position all season. He is a shooting guard not a point guard. Part of that was due to injuries but Pope didn't seem to do him any favors with the substitutions. He and Malachai played well off each other but they stopped being on the court together. I am just sad that a family of die hard UK fans, including two of our best football players, have such a bad taste in their mouths because our fans run their mouths off at players and their families - esp. ones we know care about the program. How many Khalil Whitney situations are we going to have where we find out in hindsight more was going on at the time and we have to look back and realize we were making the situation worse by trying to make ourselves feel better about the outcome of a game.
People ONLY do these mental gymnastics for kids from Kentucky.

We used to expect kids to do WHATEVER to help the team win basketball games. We used to applaud when a kid would play a different position to get on the field. The love of the game. Team first. The name on the front of the jersey.

But Poor Travis Perry: Out of position.
Poor Jasper: Out of position.

Most Shooting guards actually think they're point guards and WANT the basketball in their hands. But these shooting guards from Kentucky are being abused when they're asked to be point guards.

My God, how mentally soft they must be.

Sounds to me like he's also trying to make it a race thing lmao.

Mentioned he thought they would get treated like the Sheppards but it's different when you don't fit. I guess he didn't see the difference in how Reed played vs Jasper. I also guess he didn't see the backlash Reed got for sporting Arkansas gear. What a complete idiot.
Yeah not one ounce of racism involved here. Its all about disatisfaction with his performance and output this year. There's a long list of local Kentucky boys who came here wth big dreams and left taking a ton of heat due for not cutting it and most of them were white guys.

That said, even with the money they make today, I'm sensistive to the kids (especially the local ones) and their families and cringe when I see them getting criticized so much. Dont get me wrong I do the same mostly in my private crowd but I still try to see it from their side too. Jasper didnt come here to just cash checks and I'm sure he wanted to succeed for himself and UK. And like Derrick said it has to be as hard on him and his family to see him struggle than any of us. I'm sure they had much happier outcome and enjoyment planned in watching him here.

The mistake a lot of us make is when we see players stuggle we automatically turn them into the enemy or bad guys and place a bad guy demeanor on them when they really arent. We see them turn the ball over and miss shots and get upset and take it personal because they are costing us enjoyment and are screwing up on purpose just to ruin our good time. The truth is THEY"RE NOT. And I think thats what is missed and why I try not to get to personal when "evaluating" and discussing their performance. No question if gets me worked up but you have to know how to step back from that and see it from their side too . . . if not this whole FAN thing has nothing to do with supporting the guys and the team and is instead just a "what have you done to provide ME entertainment and enjoyment lately" kind of thing.

Um, actually the criticism should be playing Jasper too much. I think Pope felt obligated to play Jasper when he shouldn't have even played the amount he did.

Like everyone else has said: Can't guard. Selfish. Jacks up threes early in shot clock. Too small/tiny. Turnover prone. Bad family drama throughout season. Possible bad locker room presence due to family in ear so unhappy about playing time and usage. Teams always go on runs whenever he got subbed in..... Etc.

Pope might as well have played Oweh and Aberdeen 40 minutes per game.

I think the issue with fans is more about the player's attitude and issues with the family getting too involved and speaking out of place - It's not just about bad play. Everyone understands he played out of position and all that.

It's more about Jasper appearing selfish while not seeming to understand his weaknesses and why he doesn't get more playing time. Then the background noise with his family getting upset makes things even worse.

I mean, did Reed Sheppard ever openly complain about coming off the bench (when he should have started)? Did he ever seem upset or not be a team player? Did his family ever openly criticize Cal for this?

Older people are so ignorant of how the internet works. Good luck at the next school, where there will still be fans and criticism will also exist.

Jasper sucks, plain and simple. At least for this level. He is top 5 of the worst 5 star players I have ever seen. Can barely dribble and has one move and it's a step back jack. Maybe instead of worrying about why people don't care if he transfers, his family should worry about getting him proper training and removing that OTE, mixtape, terrible shot taking he developed.
These booms are absolutely retarded when it comes to the internet damn. This is at EVERY PROGRAM AND ORGANIZATION. It’s actually light here compared to others like Auburn Tennessee even Alabama / LSU. Kentucky is nowhere near as bad. Just look around, those programs are cesspools. Look at Ohio state fans, cesspools. It will be this way wherever they go but worse. It’s unbelievable people over 55 don’t understand how this works by now.

**Not all, but it’s a routine problem with the 55/60and older crowd. Not to mention, you can’t even tell if it’s trolls you’re talking to.

This is a relative. Not his dad or even JJ.
Dad’s a coach and former football star. I’m sure he realizes JJ needs to work. Neither of them are complaining. In fact I’m sure his dad has gone through this exact scenarios many times in his career as a coach. Dennis will tell JJ to get with it this summer and ignore the outside noise and also tell his brother to pipe down and let it play out in the long game

Maybe … but I get the feeling JJ won’t be back. That’s probably best for both parties. He’s not a really good player and Pope is a pathetic coach so just let him go.

If he was too concerned with Jasper's future he would have bhad him in the weight room as a sophomore eating 5k calories a day and lifting weights. I've seen firsthand what it can do for a high school basketball player that's built like Jasper

Sounds like Jasper is gone.
Didn’t read past the first few sentences. Man, I’m sorry your nephew isn’t Kentucky quality but that’s not on the fans. He’s getting paid so it’s fair game at this point. Seeing a team give up CONSISTENTLY while making more money than most in rupp is going to catch crap. This dude had an argument before this NIL bs. I don’t care this guy who hit the genetic lottery played football at Kentucky. His opinion is absolutely useless to BBN

I get that Genediesel, but my take is that sometimes we project an attitude on them that is not always a reality.

For example. You mentioned the narrative that JJ is a "selfish" player and a lot of us have had that opinion througout season. And all of us form that opinion on how he plays, taking bad shots etc. Its just assumed that he's doing that and playing that way because HE is selfish and only cares about himself and thats what forms the opinion and once we do that we react with venom at him because Hey he's a selfish kid and deserves right???!!!

What if he's not a selfish kid and is a great kid that is just struggling to learn how to play at the next level. A lot of players dominate the ball in high school and carry the load as scorers because 1) the can, and 2) their team needs them too. I think thats what were seeing in Jasper. He clearly was used to getting around the floor anywhere he wanted in high school and getting any shot he wanted.

He's not used to operating out of sets and rotations and is clearly most comfortabel with the ball in his hands trying to get his shot. Now he's facing resistance he's not used to and he's trying to figure out how to get comfortable in an offense he's never played through. IMO he's not a selfish kid or player, he's a freshman struggling badly and when he's out there hes jus trying to do the only thing he knows how to do.

Thats what I was trying to say.
