The potential for '27 class is through the roof. PA, in general, is as loaded of a prospect list that I can remember in recent memory - let alone our other regional traditional areas.

The reality is can we keep these guys committed? And can we secure Hiller, Gregory, Robinson, Bonner, Smith, Kalis? This class has the potential to be top 5-ish - and I know we say that every year, lol. But it seems like Franklin has been able to secure one of these stacked classes every 3-4 years or so that we build around these "championship-potential" core classes.

A lot comes off the books at the end of this season - does the staff push chips in on the potential of the '27 class?

Reminds me of Austin Scott.
Wash your mouth out with soap. Scott went to my local HS and he was all world. Senior YEAR 3,853 yards , 53 TDs and most of the second halfs were played with a running clock. He should have been a first round draft choice, but he was a true knucklehead. Case in point, freshman year he was being tutored by Sue Paterno. Scott blew her off and immediately went to the infamous JoePa dog house. He would occasionally emerge, only to take up "residency" again until Joe eventually threw him off the team.

Would appreciate opinion from BWI on Spell's decommitting or not.
He's taking visits. I would hardly call him committed at this point. Seider going after him hard at ND.

There has been some back and forth (between the lines) between Seider and Drayton the past few weeks.

Worth a listen.

He presents a more intelligent, reasoned, balanced, thorough "take" than the hordes of cohorts who give hot takes as if their hair was on fire.
That was 5 minutes of a commentary that was 1,000% more intelligent and insightful than what one would ever see from just about any other person "covering Penn State" (or, probably, any other program).

A long way to go on this one, however, Landon’s correct IMO. If a kid comes out with a list of schools who have the best chance of flipping him, he may as well de-commit.
yep- nothing but red flags here- move on

It's almost a bad thing when kids commit too early. They start to realize they are missing out on all of the pampering that goes along with the recruiting process and want to take visits. I don't think this is unique to PSU.

It's professional sports. 90-95% of free agents sign for the most money. This kid isn't the problem. If PSU offers the most money, he'll end up here. Lots of time between now and December 2026.
💯
Not knowing his current financial situation I read this to say all things equal he is coming to PSU. He might even take a small discount.

If one of those other schools offers him significantly more to go there he can't pass that up.

Yes. The same peeps that have criticized Franklin for it probably thought Joe was a genius when he did it.
No doubt. Same ones have been calling for a change for years now....but he keeps winning so they keep pushing the line farther. MNC Or bust...fire the HC. LOL, damn expectations.

just driving up his pricetag.

Agree with this - today's environment incents recruits to create a "bidding war" situation. The only thing their "commitment" does is create a platform from which to conduct their auction with a clear "reserve" protecting them. Given today's realities, recruits should not be able to use Program's "Commitments" (i.e., resource commitments) in this way and effectively shop offers with zero negative consequences.

He's definitely not committed at this point. 4-5 visits to other schools this fall + agreeing to do an article for On3 titled "6 schools that could flip me" - I mean, I think we all know the type of personality and crowd he's rolling with at this point.

I'd imagine with the payroll coming off the books after this season, Franklin & Co will probably be willing to match whatever he gets? Two years in a row lose the in-state 5*? We also have a pretty good track record with PA RBs turning into stars.

This one defineitly isn't over for any school involved, us included. But I have a feeling we're going to see a completely different Singleton/Allen this year with the development from Drayton. Seider is a great RB coach, but IMO, he's much of a re recruiter than a developer. I think things will work themselves out this year with on the field results.

How would you propose to stop it?

How about NIL penalties to the player being recruited example you commit to one place via verbally, social medially, however its done--- but end up somewhere else--- a portion of your actual NIL you receive from the school you sign with lets say 20% goes to the school you decommitted from.....maybe great in theory.. easy to track... probably hard to enforce as in who does the enforcing?

this would instantly stop any early commitments used as leverage by the player and in some cases by the university as well (poaching)

Seems like a pretty heavy administrative burden for the sake of appeasing the message board community. Might be better to have a binding early signing period.

More in line with what I'm thinking.... I think the problem is that most states don't allow 16 & 17 year olds to enter into binding contracts. Still complete ******** that these kids can use, and leverage, resources like this with zero "quid pro quo".

1. Allow kids to sign binding contracts with a school as early as junior year; give it some teeth - penalties for school/player if broken, but allow maybe a signing bonus and cancellation should a coach leave.
2. Salary Cap/Collective Bargaining. NIL is backwards right now like rookie contracts used to be - correct that.

so what I said cant be a binding contract? words put out in the either should still have meaning the absence of the binding contract nullifies what they say till they sign the contract ... the ole "put up or shutup" as it were for the player--- meaning put the nil fines in the contract but enforcing everyone to sign one would seem the biggest hurdle
