Andy Kotelnicki reaches for a pink-and-black toy sitting on the desk in his office to make a point.
“You know what this is right here?” the Kansas offensive coordinator asks. “Are you a fan of ‘The Office,’ you watch ‘The Office’?”
The object he holds up is easily recognizable. And yes,
Michael Scott kept one on his desk, too.
“It’s called the Hoberman sphere,” Kotelnicki says. “I use it to illustrate that football is super easy.”
He points to opposite ends of the collapsed, jagged star and the path between them and offers his analogy: “Get a football from here to here.” If you have big enough dudes, he says, you can go over it. If you have fast enough dudes, you can go around it. And then there’s the third option. Kotelnicki pinches the two ends and pulls them apart, revealing the expanded sphere with all its wide-open gaps and space.
This is how Kansas’ offense beats a defense. You use your skill set against what the defense gives you to exploit.
