Lack of Tempo

The lack of tempo/rhythm with Penn State's offense, in my view, is a big problem...
  • Lineman sit in their stance way too long waiting for the "perfect" playcall...affects their ability to fire off the ball.
  • Every play seems to be slow developing...it's like running is sand
  • Seems like we are reacting and changing plays based on defensive alignment vs. having the defense adjust to our offensive scheme. This is probably a function of lack of playmakers and cohesiveness with O-Line
This isn't going to change...the Offense is not built, nor is it schemed or have the playmakers to consistently make big plays.
Play slow/methodical offense, don't turn the ball over, rely on defensive and maybe special teams...this is the identity of this Team.

I agree. Penn State has a superior defense and that should allow the offense to play aggressive.

Franklin decided to dumb down the team to play timid and tight. A sack is better than a shot down field. A fair catch is better than a seven yard return. A completed three yard pass with seven yards to go for a first down is better than throwing the ball ten yards down field.

Teams know what we are doing on almost every play. Sign stealing? A little. Knowing our formations, motion and route trees? 100%

Here's an example. Our drive prior to the last TD. 1st and 10 on our own 15. Indiana definitely knew it was a pass. They pass blitzed and none of the non-blitzing DBs looked at the potential handoff.

Three times this year Penn State has played the ‘worst rush defense in the B1G’ and each time they have rushed for fewer yards than said defense has allowed on average.

Great post. It’s called overthinking and allowing the defense to read your personnel and narrow down the play options. Franklin thinks it’s a FNG chess game rather than smash mouth football which is what’s played in the B1G. At least that’s what the board geniuses are saying in regard to Oregon and Washington getting a lesson when they join the conference. The NASCAR offense allowed JoMo’s offense to keep a defense from substituting when it put em on the ropes. Not in yurshich’s hard drive.
