Can't recall which game it was I was watching this weekend, but they flagged a defender for roughing the passer, because he landed on the QB after hitting him. What I don't understand is this: you have a 300 lb athlete, running full speed into the QB (with a clean hit) but you somehow expect him to pull up and not fall on the QB? Most QB hits are from angles or the QB is dragged down. Sometimes, though, a defender ends up with a clean, straight shot to the QB and hits him face-on. I just don't see how it's even reasonable to ask him to pull up and not fall on the QB. If he pulls up to not him as hard, maybe the QB makes a move to evade the hit. I don't think it should have roughing against the Alabama defender Ewers was hurt either. Like targeting, there are obviously situations where you can see a defender intentionally driving a QB into the ground, but that's fairly easily distinguishable from instances where the defender landing on the QB is just a result of physics.
