It's really very simple- we need to spend less and tax more.

Problem is over the years, the ratio of the number of workers in the labor force to retirees has gone from 3:1 to 2:1; would be great if there were a way to magically introduce a population that could help close that gap….

I’ve always felt we should spend the same overall for at least a decade, and we might run a surplus at that point

Hear me out…

If we would spend less, we likely wouldn’t have to tax more. Teaching politicians to live within their means would be a good start.

The hole we're in requires both. But pretending that it doesn't allows us to continue to do neither, so that's what we'll continue to do.

How do we know if we have to tax more if we don’t know how much we can cut out? We may have to, but until we cut spending, we won’t know what we need to do. Here’s an idea for starters….deliver mail every other day instead of every day…..that would save a bunch of money and no one would miss anything. The problem is if you give a politician more money, they will just spend more.

If only this was the 1900s when unskilled laborers were in demand.

You think the postal workers will take a 50% pay cut?

Don’t have to, just cut the work force by 50%.
You should probably check out what we actually spend on the postal service- it's not enough to move the needle. We could eliminate the Navy to save some real bucks, but we better learn Chinese first.

I like Chinese food. Americanized Chinese food. That’s where it ends.

I myself was a janitor, a dishwasher, a garbageman. There’s no shame in honest work.
Dug holes in cemeteries for the foundation for tombstones in the Sharon area during college summers.
Was a dishwasher/busboy/cook at a Mr. Steak while in high school.

What do you think the best solution is to our situation? Since you don't think that raising the age is an option, then would you agree with raising the contribution rates from the current ~6%/12% to something like 8%/16% or 10%/20% to always keep the retirement age at 67?
The best solution is taking the cap off of SS contributions. Let’s have the most affluent in society pay SS tax on every dollar earned. And before you say, we can’t do that, it’s “not fair”; too bad. Life is not fair, it never was, and never will be. What could be better than increasing the funds in the system off of the backs that could most afford it? If I’m making a million per year, I’m not going to complain about the extra SS tax that I’m paying, and neither should anyone else.

See, this is a big part of the problem….of course cutting back on one thing isn’t going to fix the problem, but doing a bunch of cut backs is what’s necessary. This was just one example of waste that could be trimmed.

So what’s the magic number that brings about a penalty for being successful? And be careful, because whatever amount you choose, politicians will lower it over time.

I’m not understanding your question; there isn’t any magic number. If I made 3.8 million last year, then I pay SS tax (7-8%, not sure of the exact rate) on my 3.8 million dollar earnings.

Perfect…more money for the government to mismanage.

Is that the same as a penalty for being poor?

I’m not as pessimistic as you apparently. We need taxes for roads, bridges, schools, and other assorted infrastructure. People like yourself must think taxes are unnecessary; I choose to live in reality not fantasy.

The Social Security income tax cap for 2025 is $176,100. So, anybody making over $176,100 doesn’t pay social security tax on their income over that amount.
