Wow. This thread has gone way off the rails. From a guy getting arrested at McDonald's to debates about healthcare and education.
We really are ALL.-KNOWING. .

I myself was a janitor, a dishwasher, a garbageman. There’s no shame in honest work.Reggie Oliver took a job as a janitor just to get enough time for health care.
These are my "work from home jobs." Sorry. I'll see myself out.I myself was a janitor, a dishwasher, a garbageman. There’s no shame in honest work.
We don't have a health care system. We have a health care industry that cares about profit, not health. It ain’t the health care system
If we would spend less, we likely wouldn’t have to tax more. Teaching politicians to live within their means would be a good start. It's really very simple- we need to spend less and tax more.
The hole we're in requires both. But pretending that it doesn't allows us to continue to do neither, so that's what we'll continue to do.If we would spend less, we likely wouldn’t have to tax more. Teaching politicians to live within their means would be a good start.
How do we know if we have to tax more if we don’t know how much we can cut out? We may have to, but until we cut spending, we won’t know what we need to do. Here’s an idea for starters….deliver mail every other day instead of every day…..that would save a bunch of money and no one would miss anything. The problem is if you give a politician more money, they will just spend more. The hole we're in requires both. true- if you vote for Rs or Ds. I don't, so don't blame me.How do we know if we have to tax more if we don’t know how much we can cut out? Problem is over the years, the ratio of the number of workers in the labor force to retirees has gone from 3:1 to 2:1; would be great if there were a way to magically introduce a population that could help close that gap….

Don’t have to, just cut the work force by 50%.You think the postal workers will take a 50% pay cut?
You should probably check out what we actually spend on the postal service- it's not enough to move the needle. We could eliminate the Navy to save some real bucks, but we better learn Chinese first.Don’t have to, just cut the work force by 50%.

I would prefer they lose my mail every other day instead of every day so i’m in.How do we know if we have to tax more if we don’t know how much we can cut out? The best solution is taking the cap off of SS contributions. Let’s have the most affluent in society pay SS tax on every dollar earned. And before you say, we can’t do that, it’s “not fair”; too bad. Life is not fair, it never was, and never will be. What could be better than increasing the funds in the system off of the backs that could most afford it? If I’m making a million per year, I’m not going to complain about the extra SS tax that I’m paying, and neither should anyone else. What do you think the best solution is to our situation? Since you don't think that raising the age is an option, then would you agree with raising the contribution rates from the current ~6%/12% to something like 8%/16% or 10%/20% to always keep the retirement age at 67?
See, this is a big part of the problem….of course cutting back on one thing isn’t going to fix the problem, but doing a bunch of cut backs is what’s necessary. This was just one example of waste that could be trimmed. You should probably check out what we actually spend on the postal service- it's not enough to move the needle. We could eliminate the Navy to save some real bucks, but we better learn Chinese first.
So what’s the magic number that brings about a penalty for being successful? And be careful, because whatever amount you choose, politicians will lower it over time. The best solution is taking the cap off of SS contributions. I’m not understanding your question; there isn’t any magic number. If I made 3.8 million last year, then I pay SS tax (7-8%, not sure of the exact rate) on my 3.8 million dollar earnings. So what’s the magic number that brings about a penalty for being successful? Perfect…more money for the government to mismanage.I’m not understanding your question; there isn’t any magic number. If I made 3.8 million last year, then I pay SS tax (7-8%, not sure of the exact rate) on my 3.8 million dollar earnings.
pay off the debtPerfect…more money for the government to mismanage.

I’m not as pessimistic as you apparently. We need taxes for roads, bridges, schools, and other assorted infrastructure. People like yourself must think taxes are unnecessary; I choose to live in reality not fantasy.Perfect…more money for the government to mismanage.

do you actually know any rich people?
The Social Security income tax cap for 2025 is $176,100. So, anybody making over $176,100 doesn’t pay social security tax on their income over that amount. If I’m making a million per year, I’m not going to complain about the extra SS tax that I’m paying, and neither should anyone else.
