How has this worked with the faceless government entity called the VA?

Sure, but government programs can improve - they are constantly audited and reviewed. My dad goes to the VA and said it's a lot better than it used to be (he's a retired Marine). When was the last time your health care insurance 'improved'? They are accountable to shareholders.

I hate to tell you, that scenario is already big business for other countries and for the US. Many, many people go out of the country for heath care, drugs, and procedures. Cruise lines have passengers who go on semi monthly drug cruises to buy prescriptions. Cheaper to pay for the cruise and the drugs than to get it in the US. Especially if it isn’t covered or the deductible is insane. Dental services are a huge business in Europe and central and South America. I know it’s slightly different as it is elective most of the time, but plastic surgery vacations are a very real thing. The sad part is that is what the people with some or a lot of money do. The poors just have to forgo care entirely until they hit Medicare.

It’s a 2 way street. There are a ton of people who come to the USA for medical care. Some of the policies would really irritate people if they knew them.

This is true, but it is wealthier foreigners who come here for treatment. Because if you have the money, health care isn't an issue.

which government programs tend to improve? If they could improve, the DMV office would become a better experience. If they could improve VA was audited and reviewed, there wouldn’t be administrators getting bonuses for delaying and denying care.

I can sue private companies when they fail to uphold their contract. Good luck suing the government, especially since they pick the judges.

Just saying, be careful for what you wish for…

I've lived abroad and have seen both sides; publicly funded health care is very good for minor, non-urgent issues and preventative care; less so for more sophisticated operations. When something is seen as 'free' (and we know it isn't), people tend to take more advantage of it. Same for education - it's why so many Europeans take so long to graduate - what's the rush?

The issue with most government organizations, especially when it comes to health care and medicine, is it is very hard to attract talent to work there. I have seen VA employees (doctors) with specialized training get bonuses, but without them, you would have a tough time getting them to work there. Same for military doctors - they get 'pro pay' to help incentivize their commission. Why do they need so much money? Medical school isn't cheap. Unless you live abroad, in which case....

Respectfully, it’s not just the wealthy. Sure some Saudi prince gets sick and he’s off to the Mayo Clinic but you’d be surprised at the other end of the spectrum too and the policies that cover anyone.

I believe you. But, when someone says, 'we can't afford to pay the taxes to ensure health care for everyone', I say, 'I already am. We pay taxes in the top tax bracket plus health care insurance.' Sure, not the case for everyone, but there is room for improvement. For profit health care incentivizes companies to deny care. I have read that if you have cash, you can often make out better by negotiating directly with hospitals/care providers.

I mean, there is a solution - most of the world has figured it out. Same for education. It’s just Americans do not have the appetite for it.

Is this where the beautiful people prop up the little people (and those who look like them)?

It all depends on how you define acceptable coverage. The exact same incentive to ‘deny care’, (which is a loaded phrase which often doesn’t really cover what’s going on), applies to government controlled health care in the US and places like the UK NHS too. This idea that it wouldn’t be like that under government control is just simply wrong. In many ways it’s actually worse.

The UK system is in perpetual crisis with massive delays for operations or even getting an appointment with a primary care doc or a dentist. Their government controlled system denies or limits care every day, often based on cost or patient age rather than on evidence based medicine.

Exactly. If you can’t afford healthcare, don’t have kids

Bottom line: try to find a job with an organization which provides a health care plan.
My retirement job rocks full health care for me n moms which is why I have a retirement job.

”how do you make a small fortune in racing? start with a large one.” insert estate, no healthcare and real illness as needed

You mean like those running Social Security and disability?? This is not a problem with an easy solution.

When Social Security started in 1935 the average lifespan for white males was 61 and white females was 65; less for African Americans. Compare that today and WM live to an average of about 76 and WW 81. My MIL is a retired Philadelphia area school teacher and gets like an 80% pension and pays almost nothing for health care. And people wonder why school systems are broke.

That is why all large cities are broke, pension and healthcare obligations for retired workers - not saying those people didn't derserve what they got - that was/is a big reason to go into some of these professions that don't pay that well upfront. I have more of an issue with Politicians that get free heathcare for life and full pensions - we can certaoinly do with out most of those people.

Try selling that to all the people who do manual labor and can’t physically make it to retirement age because their bodies can’t go any more. Politicians don’t take that into account. Nor do they care because they spend their whole lives sitting behind a desk.

Both my grandfathers started working in the coal mines at age 13. Both followed that up with construction work. My dad followed the same path after high school. None of the three made it to traditional retirement age due to being physically unable to do so. And none had a nest egg saved up because they were all living pay check to pay check trying to support their families. Yet, we have poindexters in politics, and other white collar soap boxers, saying just raise the social security age. Who takes care of our middle class? In the meantime we have baseball players making $765 million dollars. Our priorities are really f*#cked up in this country.

Irony: the shooter will now get free government healthcare in prison for the rest of his life. The poors can continue to suffer outside the jail walls and pay for it while getting nothing in return.

Yes they are, LB.
I'll be 76 in June 2025, the company offered me a three day week three yrs ago, with the same benifits I had while working full time. This has been great for me, only taking the Gov. required distribution from our retirement funds. I've been with the small company since 1984, great people.
