Looks like the ACC is nearing a tipping point

First the FSU AD spoke out about the revenue disparity with the ACC vs SEC.

Now Clemson’s AD is calling for unequal revenue sharing to combat the disparity. He wants revenue divvied up based on the value teams bring to the conference.

That, of course, won’t fly with your Wales and Dukes of the world.

Found someone saying UNC is next up to come out in favor of unequal revenue.

Things could get really interesting if they end up with a civil war over there.

Am I incorrect in remembering uneven revenue was one of the reasons the B12 had membership issues?

A bit fuzzy, but I believe you are correct. I think that was part of the motivation behind Nebraska, A&M and Mizzou bolting.

I find this all very funny. Just a few years ago they all championed the Grant of Rights contract, even though EVERYONE outside the ACC said this was a terrible scenario for the member schools. I think most of us forget that nobody in the athletics departments are making these decisions. This is coming from the presidents...academia.

I don't think Clem/FSU ends up in the SEC. Expansion is going to be all about getting the SEC brand in new markets. When UGA goes on the road, the SEC would much rather be on display in Eugene, OR than SC/FL...b/c they're already here. The same is true of B10, which is why Clem would be much more valuable to Fox/B10. However, I could see the over inflated academia minds thinking they can form a new conference with ACC/B12/P12 leftovers.

Yes. And I think this is a tactic Clem and FSU are using to create division within, so enough of the member schools want to terminate the contract. I don't recall off the top of my head, but if a certain number of schools want out, they can get out without penalty...I think.

Clemson IS coming to the SEC, in some form or another, whether it's when CFP goes to two megaconferences or whatever. It's going to happen.

I know it scares some of our fans because we view us being in the SEC as a significant advantage over Clemson, but what's our head-to-head vs Clemson over our 30 years in the SEC?

Clemson is the only non-sec team to win a college football title in the last 8 seasons, so they carry significant value to the ACC.
yeah, that was a pretty poor comment by who you responded to. Football revenue is 4x more valuable than college basketball, and that's including all schools on an average basis per school. When you're talking power 5, it is even more valuable.

Clemson, FSU, and UNC's football revenue carry the conference in terms of revenue. Yes, they make a significant amount through a lot of school's with basketball, but football is the bread winner.

Why should we divide up money with Clemson or UNC to get them to join the SEC - what's of interest is the income and exposure
a new team can bring to the table - and we already have SC and to a large extent NC blanketed with SEC exposure. - it should be about new markets -frankly schools like Oregon, Washington, Arizona, bring more opportunity to the table. This is not about another good football or basketball team - it's about markets.

Honestly, I don't think in that scenario, or even if they joined this year it helps them that significantly. IMO it actually could do the opposite. Both of my brothers graduated from Clemson and I did from USC. **they were always Clemson due to my dad's side of the fam and I was Carolina from my mom's side. I've had this discussion with them, and after I gave them my POV, they agreed with me. Unless in a forced scenario, why would you come?

To my point, they already recruit top 10 year in year our, not being in the SEC, and win against schools like UGA, Bama, FSU, Tenn, etc, all over the country in recruiting on some big name recruits. They have in their back pocket, hey, if we can beat FSU year in year out, you'll have a good shot at a power 5 conference title and an easy road to the CFP. If they come to the SEC, they lose that edge. Yeah, they'll have "we are in the SEC, play against the best" but if they do come, they'll have that card against big 10 schools and other lesser FB programs that are in the ACC, Big 12, etc, and then have to play against Bama, UGA, Tenn, LSU, UF, A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, on a lot more regular basis, resulting in a lot more losses than playing against the lowly ACC teams and no longer be able to talk guys into coming to a school in the middle of no where to have a cheap ride to the CFP.

I don't disagree with any of that. Our fans have traditionally viewed "come play in the SEC, the best football conference in America" as a recruiting chip they don't want Clemson to have.

I agree with your rationale, though, that any recruiting or financial benefit would be offset by the more rigorous schedule. They probably would have been a 3 or 4 loss regular season team in the SEC this past season.

I disagree. I don't think so. They'll go where ever the $$ is. And they'll be a big target for the B10, which has more $$ than the SEC.

But I do agree with you that it doesn't really give either school an advantage. It COULD in the future IF the ACC doesn't implode and Clem is stuck there. That gap is going to be massive in terms of $$. But, in either case, you play to your strength. "Why not come to clem and have a cake walk to the ACCG and/or the CFP every year?". That sounds much better to a recruit than "hey, come to USC...the SEC makes more $$ than the ACC."

Personally idgaf where they end up. We'll play them regardless. Whether it's the B10 or SEC, they're going to lose their main recruiting pitch, so that's good.

It's also plausible that the ACC powers view this as their best bet to close the gap with the SEC while still maintaining the ACC. Some of the other other schools like GaTech, Wake, etc, would likely agree to the unequal revenue sharing to keep the ACC intact b/c they know they'd be on the outside looking in when it comes to getting picked up by another conference. They may just settle for reduced revenue in exchange for the relative safety of being in the ACC.

Unless the B1G drastically changes its requirements to be a member, Clemson can't and won't ever be a member of the B1G.

I guess my joke didnt go over so well. Of course football pays the bills and the taters are king of the ACC. If they think they deserve more for their football brand, they should probably take some kinda deduction for their basketball team... since basketball rules in that conference and they have been carrying clemson forever.

Ahhh….taters using the Texas in the Big 12 approach. Interesting. This is surprising as to me the taters would join the Southern conference if it kept their easy path to conference championships and the playoffs. Odd they want to rock the boat.

Interesting...what requirements would not be met by Clemson?
They are not a member of the AAU. Read about the BIG Consortium....the B1G is as much an academic conference as an athletic one....all members except for Nebraska is an AAU school (and they were at the time of admission to the conference). The B1G Consortium controls around $1B+/- annually in research dollars that are distributed to the member schools.

Yeah, it's hard to tell what their motivation is. Could be either of the following:

A. They, along with FSU And UNC, are trying force some collapse of the ACC so they can get out without the Grant of Rights being enforced and move to the SEC.

B. They, along with FSU and UNC, are merely trying to close the gap in revenue with the SEC and know the lower tier-ACC schools will go along with unequal revenue sharing in order to keep the ACC intact. This is their best way to increase revenue but keep the lighter ACC schedule.

To recap, FSU, CU, and any other acc members starting this revenue disparity bitching, THEY AGREED to the terms of acc TV money distribution and as members of the conference. You want to change the rules in the middle of the game. Do UNC, DU, and UVA want to start complaining about TV revenue sharing during basketball season. I got news for FSU and CU. College basketball fans across the country aren’t DVR’ing their basketball games.

Interesting. As I said earlier, these decisions are being made and driven by academia. Nothing would surprise me as to how this end with them.

It's gotta be "B". Clemson has certainly built it's so-called tradition on the backs of inferior competition.

please do not bail out ACC teams. SEC could have poached a couple of teams a few years ago and destroyed the conference but chose not to. Let them destroy themselves if they do choose.

It’s not just about tv markets it’s about brands, and whether you like to admit it or not. Clemson is currently a top 5 brand. If they can hold on to that for the next 6 years they will find a landing spot and I’ll bet ESPN is not so willing to let them go. That means the SEC.

I know you are correct on this, I’m just not so sure that doesn’t change if a 2 conference college football arises. That seems to be where we are headed.

What leverage do FSU and clemson have to get an unequal share of the revenue?

That is a good question. I get the impression the GOR isn't as ironclad as some think. And I say this because I don't think unequal revenue is a permanent thing, but a sign of the end for that conference.

Jmo, but I think FSU and a few other teams have an out in mind already.
