Here is all I know from my "sources". Newton was all but on board with MSU, and his been for some time now. No big suprise there. Oklahoma was only a minor threat, our coaches were not very worried about them. When Auburn got a visit, the collective sphincter of the coaching staff tightened. Again, probably not a big suprise.
During the Auburn visit, I was informed that Newton was sold on Auburn, but was not prepared to commit without talking to his father. This helped us hold on apparently. I was told Newton would be committing to Auburn Monday/Tuesday of last week, and was suprised he didnt. Newton is having a tough time telling Mullen he is going elsewhere, which prolonged his announcement of a commitment to Auburn. Our coaches are aware that Newton is all but gone and are trying to do what they can. When I saw the Christmas day announcement, I checked in with my "sources" and we are not getting through to Newton.
Disclaimer: My "sources" also told me we were all but locked in with Scientology Petersen to, so maybe my guy is way off. Even after Mullen was hired, my "source" still holds we had Petersen on go.
Now, my take only...Mullen has got to be pretty miffed about Newton going to Auburn. We have been on the guy since Mullen was hired and Mullen was sure we had him. Auburn being able to jump in at the last minute and take him away has got to be devastating. I would suggest this is Mullen's first real failure at recruiting. This one will sting. While the sky is certainly not falling, it really pisses me off that the one time, a legit prospect, ideally suited for this offense is all but a lock goes elsewhere tells me a ton about what QBs think about our school.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-freakin'-nite.
