I'm sure LaRussa is thinking that Isringhausen is going to make some miraculous comeback at some point, and that will be like getting a good player at the deadline. At least that's the BS they're trying to sell me right now.

Seriously, I think the problem is there aren't any closers on the market, athough Brian Fuentes can close and he's LH. The good news is that the Cardinals have a glut of OF's that they could trade- I'm guessing that Nick Stavinoha at Memphis could be trade bait, but I think that the Rockies are pretty solid in the OF.

I wouldn't be surprised if LaRussa and Duncan move someone like Wellenmeyer, Piniero, or Looper to the closer role once Wainwright and Carpenter come back. (hopefully)

Personally, I'd like to see Wellenmeyer get a shot at the closer role once everyone comes back.

Teams dont want older players ie some of the outfielders. They want prospects and thats something that they dont need to do. The future is very bright in St Louis, dont ruin to make one stupid move.

You can forget Issy in the closer role. He's done with that. From what I saw the other day theres no way in hell that he gets the closer role back.

Carpenter is going to make one more rehad start for Memphis and then hes coming up. Wainwright is not far behind.

I don't think the Cardinals are worrying about keeping up with two teams who have something like one World Championship in the last 100 years between them.

The three you mentioned are headed to middle relief one-by-one as/if Carpenter and Wainwright get back. None of those three have the stuff to be closers. The Cardinals are focused on LH relief help (Sherrill @ Baltimore).

The most likely prospects to be traded are Mitchell Boggs, Jess Todd, Bryan Anderson, and Johnathan Jay. Boggs hasn't been very impressive in his 6 outings, Anderson can hit but he's not the defensive catcher that Molina is, and the Cardinals have a bunch of Jays in their system. Letting Todd go is the only thing that could bite them in the butt.

Despite this mini-run they've been on the last week or so, I still think they need a bat.

If they pull a blockbuster, I think you could see Ludwick or Shumaker included.

I would hate to trade Colby Rasmus, and it seems that is who everyone wants. OEM makes a good point, trade Ludwick (a good righhanded powerbat) and move Rasmus up at some point. Hell, LaRussa has sat Ludwick 2 of the 5 games coming out of the All-Star break anyway.
Isn't Chris Perez the future closer? Put him there now.

except for the part about Boggs. He had three quality starts- including a shutout, I believe, and then he had one REALLY bad start when LaRussa wanted to save the bullpen and let him give up about 10 runs, which blew his ERA up.

I do also agree with everyone about not trading prospects, and I have also thought that Ludwick could be moved as well. I don't think the Cardinals will move Rasmus, they've invested so much in Ankiel that I doubt that they would move him, so that kind of leaves Schumaker and Ludwick left as trade bait.

If the Cardinals don't make a move, I will be OK with that. I don't think that there's really a whole lot out there, certainly not enought to warrant giving up someone like Todd or Boggs.

about Izzy. But LaRussa seems to think that he's Mariano Rivera.

I would have shut him down in, May at the latest.

Boggs had one decent start against the Red Sox. The rest were so-so. He's a five inning pitcher who's stock will never be higher. They should move him. They have better arms in their system.
