I’m friends with and still play in some national men’s tournaments with Dante Bichette. He will never claim that he should be in the Hall of Fame but in my opinion he’s a better player than Harold Baines. Dante just did not have the longevity that Harold did and a lot of his people put his numbers on playing in Coors field but he had a five or six year stretch where he was one of the best five hitters in baseball.I’m fine with those guys being left out even though a guy like Clemens was a shoo-in even before the time it is believed he started using PEDs. But I’m not fine with a guy like Baines being in. I can’t imagine anybody ever actually watched Harold Baines play and at any time thought to themselves, “Now there is a hall of famer for ya!”
It’s not just the writers, it’s the Hall itself in certain instances. There are few more sanctimonious humans than Jane Forbes Clark. Some of my former professional playing baseball buddies and I have been discussing this topic all week. It’s amazing how many former sports writers have an axe to grind over certain guys who these former pros believe should be in.
This is not just one or 2 big leaguers saying this, but half a dozen as well as another 15 to 20 who played minor-league ball. All are in agreement that Billy Wagner and Gary Sheffield belong in and nearly universal agreement that Andrew Jones should be just for his defensive abilities.
No one dislikes Selig more than me but your claim that he turned a blind eye to PED use is flat out wrong. Selig tried to get random drug testing in each CBA negotiation but was consistently rebuked by Marvin Miller. In one negotiation, Miller said random drug testing was a deal breaker. Even after random drug testing was approved after Congress intervened Miller was still complaining about how that was an “invasion of the players’ privacy” despite the fact that every other damn union had long since agreed to drug and alcohol testing. The real travesty is that the writers voted Miller into the Hall of Fame.Or Andruw Jones? The guy was one of the best defensive CF of all time with 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, hit 434 HR and had the 3rd best fWAR from 1998-2007. He's being punished because of his mediocre 5 years after leaving Atl which is idiotic.
I think Sheff is being punished because of PEDs, even though there's no firm evidence. Bud Selig, who promoted these players while turning a blind eye in the PED era, is in the HOF. Baseball writers are a joke.
Funny how this life long Braves’ fan never heard anything about Jones and PED rumors. I think Jones fell off a cliff because he spent too much time and money at Cheetahs and got lazy and fat.Maybe the writers know more about Jones than we do? There have been some PED rumors linked to him over the years, especially after he fell off a performance cliff after cashing in on a big deal. Maybe once he got his big money he went off the juice?
Haines got in through the Veteran’s committee which was a homey job with the White Sox owner and his former manager, Tony LaRussa, being on the committee. An absolute farce.I don’t know, once the bar is set the bar is set. If Harold Baines is a hall of fame player than players better than him should be in as well.
It’s like the hockey hall of fame putting Guy Carbonneau in. I don’t know how you can put him in but not even consider Brent Sutter.
They are out there, but not as loud as some others. Or perhaps it was his domestic battery charge for putting hands around his wife’s neck and threatening to kill her on Christmas morning?Funny how this life long Braves’ fan never heard anything about Jones and PED rumors. Those on the ballot needed 289 votes to be elected. Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, and Joe Mauer were elected -- Beltre and Mauer in their 1st year on eligibility. Billy Wagner just missed being elected, receiving 284 votes. He has 1 year left of being on the ballot. Gary Sheffield, in his last year on the ballot, was frustratingly close, getting 246 votes.
Chase Utley received 111 votes in his 1st year of eligibility.
6 times in the top 5 of MVP voting, winning once (should have won in ‘85 as well, but finished second). Baines highest ever finish always #10, only receives vote in 4 seasons. It’s ridiculous.Veterans committee needs to induct Dave Parker.

And Dick Allen.Veterans committee needs to induct Dave Parker.
I appreciate the explanation, but I still don’t get it.
But to answer your question, no I never considered Harold Baines to be a hall of fame player. I’d I remember correctly, I think somehow Jerry Reinsdorf was the big pusher of his hall of fame candidacy.

Is important as noted, Murphy led the league in HR one year with 36…
Bill James has said that if you made up a team of the worst players in the HOF at each position, you'd play in the World Series every year. His fall off was pretty harsh though. I think by my personal standard, Murphy is not a hall of famer. I think by the standard set, he should be in.
It’s happened a few times. No one was voted in in 2013 for example. Was there ever a year that no players were voted into the Baseball HOF? How much money would be lost by the town of Cooperstown and surrounding area? Restaurants, hotels, etc. I'm sure they certainly want as many players voted in as possible to elicit baseball fans to visit as tourists for the ceremony weekend when hotel rates are very high.
