I was at the bar the other night and got into an argument with a Texas fan. I of course said the SEC was a premier league in football and he argued that the talent of the SEC was over-rated, especially on defense. He then told me that i couldnt name 10 "impact players" from the SEC currently playing in the NFL. Impact player being defined as someone that their repsective team would be affected greatly if they were to lose them - a game changer.

For the record, i quickly came up with
peyton
eli
haynesworth
jason whitten
patrick willis
then my mind went blank and due quick wit i declared there were too many more to name. So a little help in case im in the situation again....Who you got for top 10 impact players from the SEC?

Demeco Ryans - Houston Texans
Hines Ward is a game changer in my opinion, both in attitude and in play - Pittsburg Steelers
Karlos Dansby leads the defense - Arizona Cardinals
Matthew stafford - Lions would suck even worse if he wasn't there

Those are just off the top of my head and may not be "premier" players.

the talent that is headed to the NFL this year from the SEC..

Ronaldo McClain
Brandon Spikes
Carlos Dunlap
Eric Berry
Joe Haden (that DB from UF)
Terrance Cody
That DT from UT
Tim Tebow
Anthony Dixon
Ryan Mallet (maybe?)

All those guys would be first team all Big XII. Then you could have moved onto the previous National Championship teams..

2008 - UF
2007 - LSU
2006 - UF
2005 - Texas
2004 - USC (Undefeated Auburn)
2003 - LSU

So 4 out of the last 6 and undefeated Auburn? Thats pretty legit.. Especially after the *** whipping Bama lays down on UT in a few days.. </p>

Here is a link for you:

NFL Rosters 2008

The SEC had the most players in the NFL in 2008 with 259. The Big 12 was actually 5th with 170. Also, the SEC has led this stat since 2001.

As far as impact players go you forgot Hines Ward , Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, Jamaal Anderson, Jevon Kearse, Joseph Addai, Jay Cutler, and there are others, but defining "impact" is the major question.

SEC Players in the NFL

Here are those I think are major impact players, either currently or in the past couple of seasons:

DeMeco Ryans
Shaun Alexander
Chris Samuels
Tony Ugoh
Karlos Dansby
Rudi Johnson
Ronnie Brown
Heath Evans
Takeo Spikes
Marcus McNeil
Cadillac Williams
Brandon Jacobs
Alex Brown
Jevan Kearse
Champ Bailey
Marcus Stroud
Ben Watson
Hines Ward
Marcus Spears
Dwayne Bowe
Joe Addai
Ken Lucas
Duece McAllister (in the recent past)
Patrick Willis
Eli Manning
Derrick Burgess (recent past)
Donald Lee
Fred Smoot (recent past)
Jamal Lewis (recent past)
Peyton Manning
Jason Witten
Haynesworth
Jay Cutler

There are a TON of OL and Def players that are impact players that I didn't list simply because they aren't as recognizable to me.

Jerod Mayo...very young, but eventually will lead the patriots defense, if he isn't already. Bradie James and Marcus Spears are 2 Cowboy defense leaders. Redskins defense really isn't there problem and their secondary consists of LaRon Landry and Carlos Rogers, both are impact players. It's a good thing for NFL QBs that David Pollack got a season ending injury, or else he would be dominating. I believe if you take D-Fad out of the Black Hole you get a Adrian Peterson-esque RB.

Obviously this season has changed things a bit (ie, Jay Cutler being included), but I think it's safe to assume that the players who are on the list but shouldn't would roughly cancel with players who should be there but aren't (ie, Ronnie Brown).

The list breaks down as so:

ACC - 21 (The ACC was probably more reliant on one school than any other conference, but not absurdly so)

SEC - 15 (Tenn was the most represented school with 5)

Big Ten - 15 (Produced a lot of O-linemen)

Pac 10 - 9 (Not nearly as reliant on USC as I would've guessed but not as many overall as I would've guessed either)

Big East - 8

Big XII - 8 (According to this list at least, elite NFL players is not an argument a Big XII player should be using)

MWC - 6

Others - 26 (Troy had 4 players, as many as almost any program except the elite few)

This is part of the list I was using: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/239325-tavern-talk-blue-chip-players-part-6-by-mike-lombardi (and yes, it's from the bleacher report, but this guy is legit, unlike some of their contributors)

surprised this guy hasn't been mentioned.

If anything he makes this list simply b/c his salary is in the same ballpark as other impact players around the league.

Thanks I meant career. Does Smoot still start for Washington. I was watching the game last night and saw the starting lineups and noticed he wasn't in it. I thought he was the opposite corner starting behind Rogers?

Alex Brown (DE for Chicago via Florida), Sidney Rice (South Carolina), and Percy "Harvey" Harvin

Those are all impact players. Harvin and Rice are rookies that are making a big impact. Mike Wallace is also making a pretty big impact as a rookie and has a chance to be that type of player as well.
