NIL Concern

University Presidents need to step in as the NCAA has obviously turned a blind eye on NIL. College football is now becoming (if not already become) a professional sport with the top players getting paid the most. I believe that school pride by young athletes will be overtaken by choosing the highest bidder if not somehow controlled. Perhaps there should be upper limits established for NIL $ based on some kind of parameters. This would at least establish even footing for Elite players and choosing a college for the right reasons will again take presidence. Even pro teams have salary caps which helps even out talent alignments within the league. Right now, it seems like the NIL concept is out of control, and therefore control parameters need to be initiated. Maybe the NCAA can regain some control by establishing these parameters!! If not, drop the NCAA and let the inmates continue to run the asylum!

I share your concerns but the horse has left the barn. As much as we might wish otherwise, “Because we know what’s best for you, we’re going to set restrictions on how much money you can make on your name, image, and likeness” is not going to fly. We fans have a binary: we either suck it up or we quit following the sport.

You're conflating salary with NIL is not appropriate. Pro players have not limits on their NIL, why should college players. A pro player can do as much as they choose outside of the game to make money, how is that different from a college athlete? Your strawman burnt to the ground.

We need all of the Centre County businesses to step up their gifting game. They have the money and they need to be part of the solution. Otherwise these big market teams are gonna dominate the NIL game

I’m more concerned with the tampering and illegal contact that seems to be happening through unofficial sources. It is like the bagman on steroids. Difference is these are official offerings through unofficial sources.

We are never going to match NIL offerings of schools in big cities or fan bases with way deeper pockets.

Hate to tell you this but "University Presidents" (sic) are the NCAA.

Even more than the small group of businesses that control most of State College, the Business and Industry trustees who tried to sacrifice the football program to keep the stench of their association with Third Mile off themselves should be throwing cash at NIL.

Yeah, I'm talking to YOU, Karen Peetz, John Surma, and Ken Frazier. This is your chance to help fade the indelible stain you forever put on the University's name.

So PSU players can do promotional spots for BNY Mellon, US Steel, and Merck (apologies for the out of date affiliations)? M'kay.

Blaise Alexander and Joel Confer need to pitch in too. Free use of a car and free gas for 4 years for all the NIL guys at a bare minimum. Ira should be able to pull some strings with upgraded housing for select athletes
Not to take this thread off the rails but have you tried to purchase a car lately? There are none to buy or lease. Dealerships are only alloted so many cars and that aren't even made yet. There are no new cars to test drive on lots. You have to put down a $500 check to get one built to test drive 3 months out. If you decide not to buy you get the $500 check back. Vehicles are also marked up $3000 to $10,000 from sticker price.

So that being said, what you propose is a crazy business decision. I'm not in car sales or sales in general, but giving away the only vehicles you have to sell is stupid.

If you think that money from any of those three former trustees would have to be used to endorse the companies they are or were affiliated with you're not really paying attention. M'kay.

How about we let the coaches pay them out of their own pockets? They can pay a a lot of players a lot of money with their 9 or 10 million a year salary.

So they'll take it from their own pockets? That's a lot of autographed photos and jerseys finding their way to trash cans in only the best neighborhoods.

Calm down my friend. It’s called Capitalism. There is nothing wrong with anyone looking to legally improve their financial status. Coaches and universities have been doing this for decades. This whole NIL topic is being blown out of proportion because the wealth is being spread to the players instead of being monopolized by coaches and universities.

And how much are TV execs making that they can afford billion dollar TV deals to the SEC and B1G on the backs of college players? NIL money is Mickey Mouse **** compared to all of the people making white collar money off these kids.

Oh, s.h.i.t! You mean none of them read this board and are going to follow through on my ask? Why did you wait to tell me?????
My point was all of them got all out of being on PSU board they could for themselves and have no interest in anything PSU related these days.

How you turn that into your last comment…well, can’t help you there.

Surma was on the Smeal School Board of Visitors for a while after leaving the BOT and still lends his name to Smeal as an honorary member.

Frazier was a keynote speaker at a business conference hosted by PSU last year and has donated more than a quarter million dollars to the University over the years.

Neither of those two are people with "no interest in anything PSU related."

Only Peetz seems to be avoiding direct involvement with PSU these days but she hasn't publicly washed her hands of her PSU association. She's on an advisory board at Johns Hopkins, where she went to grad school, but her current executive bio at Citigroup states her role as a PSU trustee even though it need not and she even mentioned her Penn State field hockey days to the author of a fluff piece in American Banker on her current Citi employment.

Well since you know so much about them, go tongue their balls and see if they give any $$$$ for anything football related. You can make the difference to get PSU NIL on top. Good luck!

Both of those places have been giving the university cars (or leasing at zero dollars) for years in exchange for seats and brand recognition. Except now instead of giving them to department heads they need to give them to athletes. In order for the team to be successful everyone needs to share some of the pain.

Your perspicacity and wit are remarkable!

Just between you and me, I must say that you are one of this message board's great treasures and I, for one, feel quite fortunate to be treated to your insightful, well-informed pearls of wisdom.

Keep up the good work!

Yes, but there are many types of toothpaste. Some whiten and others stop bleeding. I suggest we choose the prevention of bleeding as this situation seems out of control! Emmert has allowed the NCAA to be a joke like him!
1. emmert’s got this.

2. PSU will be fine because we have groundbreaking NIL.

One potential bonus to NIL - can contracts include performance/play bonuses that could entice kids to play instead of sit out bowls? Brennan kind of hinted that could be the case.

Not sure but the signage is still in and around campus. And if these two can't get it done start getting other dealerships from Philly, DMV and NJ to kick in

So the proposed Casino that Lubert is pushing to bring to the Nittany Mall, that could be the pipeline for PSU's NIL money flow. Who cares about the needs of seniors living in poverty or not affording health care, while we can field a football team worthy of winning the CFP each year. (insert sarcasm emoji). Gov. Shapiro has to show where his true loyalties are in state business!!
