The interplay between the players rights, NIL, free transfer, and the universities is complex. We currently have a situation that encourages third parties (NIL) to entice players to play for their preferred universities. The missing component is the universities themselves. They receive a tremendous amount of revenue from football, but are not sharing that with the players with the exception of scholarship, training/nutrition, and limited stipend. It seems that the universities need to have more responsibility to pay the players by sharing revenue generated by the sport. That would potentially reduce the influence and reliance on third parties, place more responsibility on the universities (where IMO it belongs), and allow the market to equilibrate.
