So the proposed Casino that Lubert is pushing to bring to the Nittany Mall, that could be the pipeline for PSU's NIL money flow. Who cares about the needs of seniors living in poverty or not affording health care, while we can field a football team worthy of winning the CFP each year. (insert sarcasm emoji). Gov. Shapiro has to show where his true loyalties are in state business!!

We need all of the Centre County businesses to step up their gifting game. They have the money and they need to be part of the solution. Otherwise these big market teams are gonna dominate the NIL game
You are joking of course. Centre County businesses can't compete with metro areas like Atlanta, Dallas etc etc.

So, Georgia Tech and SMU are going to rule the "NIL World" of college football?

Time will tell, of course, but if "NIL" ends up having some overwhelming exclusive impact wrt College Football (and I don't assume that it will), I expect it may have very little to do with "Metro Areas", and far more to do with "alumni/fans who are desperate for their team to win (or keep winning) football games".

If it did consist on the impact of the "Metro" areas, than Rutgers would be the new Alabama for the next 30 years or more considering they have the monopoly on the New York City market.... RutgersAl would be sitting in his glory for sure....

Exactly my point. Centre County Businesses will have little impact on NIL opportunities for Penn State athletes.

They can not be linked to performance or participation.
Yep, and "NIL money" was to allow student athl;etes to benefit from the marketing of their Names-Image-Likeness.

And "Grad Transfers" were supposedly for "student" athletes looking to enroll in a Graduate Level academic program - not offered by their current school :)

I think there might be two or three people who ever thought any of that was accurate.

College football may become even dirtier than boxing. In some ways it’s almost there. We have tomato cans taking a beating for a payday and to pad the resumes of best teams. Officiating is suspect in key moments of many games. Fans are expected to pay exorbitant prices at important events. But college football has taken it to a higher level with NIL.

Not even in boxing are the fans expected to assist managers in buying boxers, and then pay for their life style while they’re getting a free “Education” in addition to buying a ticket. I’m a firm believer that players should receive a piece of the action, because they’re putting their bodies on the line. But schools that can’t control their own spending habits or control costs should be made to foot the majority of the bill. When that happens I’ll be happy to pitch in and help.

I share your concerns but the horse has left the barn. As much as we might wish otherwise, “Because we know what’s best for you, we’re going to set restrictions on how much money you can make on your name, image, and likeness” is not going to fly. We fans have a binary: we either suck it up or we quit following the sport.
I am about at the latter. Tuition, room & board, books, fees, world class strength & speed coaching, free exposure to the next level, tutoring.
If any athlete had to pay for the athletic training, it would cost a small fortune.
I wish the Neanderthals in the NCAA had listened to the guy with thick glasses and a world class intellect. His plan for a dignity providing stipend could have forestalled this NIL mess.

Weren't just Joe. Smilin' Donnie had many opportunities to settle this out of court, but, no, he just couldn't let it happen. So now, idiot boy has taken his act to fu@k up the VA.

Calm down my friend. It’s called Capitalism. There is nothing wrong with anyone looking to legally improve their financial status. Coaches and universities have been doing this for decades. This whole NIL topic is being blown out of proportion because the wealth is being spread to the players instead of being monopolized by coaches and universities.
Agree, but it is not college football or an extra curricular activity. It is professional, and that may reduce appeal over time

Yes indeed. Everything that was illegal is now legal. What a great way to solve a problem. Since it's really professional football now, schools should require contracts with players and no grant in aid (aka scholarship) if the player accepts NIL money. Pay your own way just like everybody else.

Plus, no way we keep up with teams like Oregon when it comes to NIL. Knight is involved and it is staffed with a bunch of former Nike execs.

Stop bitching and start giving. Sign up to give aomething each month. I give to fball & wrestling. We have to do our best as individuals and alumni as that is our power base, not the biz’s of State College. Let’s go!

Who's bitching my friend? I was merely stating a fact. I give what I can to the University. You give what you can.

Is the gifting by Centre County businesses the tipping point for NIL successes at Penn State? I'm asking. If so, can they compete with schools near in large metropolitan areas?

Because Centre County is so tiny and remote outside of the SC city limits, we need the entire state of PA + DMV + NJ to be part of this NIL. Tap that huge alumni base and get those perks flowing to SC. That's the only way to compete with other parts of the country

I am glad we got some Tesla's on the way but we need a lot more. At a min, every revenue producing athlete gets a car/truck and free gas. Elite players get more

They can't. See my other post. We need the same dominate the state (incl. NJ and DMV) attitude for NIL
So how does this work? A player going to school in State College promotes a business based in Virginia by driving a car festooned with the business's logo around..........State College?

Social media promotion is probably 95% of that deal. I could give examples of how social media killed tournament bass fishing sponsorships but yall would give me ****. Very similar. 😉

It's really no different than any other kind of promotion. These things don't have state boundaries. You think Bryce Young is worried about the Dr Pepper spot being a national thing and not having anything to do with the state of Alabama? Remember when we paid IU to move their home game from Bloomington to FedEx field in the heart of DMV so we could play in front of OUR fans down there? We own that place. We need to start milking it for all its worth for NIL

The solution to NIL is to allow collective bargaining to happen. Don’t be surprised to see schools push this to happen. That will level the playing field and solve some of this problem. Its coming sooner than you think.

So a local business person somewhere in Virginia is going to hope that a PSU football player is going to have enough social media followers in his market to make a NIL payment economically justified? That may work with a handful of players. Across the board? Good luck.

Bryce Young doesn't care about how his Dr Pepper commercials play geographically. All Bryce Young cares about is getting paid. Dr. Pepper, of course, cares a lot about how many bottles/cans of soda Bryce Young helps them sell. In 2021, they thought that DJ Uiagalelei would help them sell product. That campaign fell flat in about as much time as an open can of Dr. Pepper on a hot day.

Actually, I don't remember PSU paying Indiana to move its 2010 home game to FedEx because PSU didn't pay Indiana, the Washington (then) Redskins did, to the tune of $3mm.

I had forgotten that the Redskins were the entity paying IU to move the game. I was there with @IrishHerb. It was extremely easy to lipread that day, everything was a variant of “Why the hell did you bring that Notre Dame fan with you?” Lol.

McGloin had a fine game, I recall.

Who paid is semantics... the game was moved there so that PSU fans could get another "home" game. It also showed how much of a chump program IU has. They were as easily bought out as a MAC program

Doesn't matter who owns the social media account. How much is Kalen King's endorsement worth to an auto dealer in Roanoke, VA or a restaurant proprietor in Ijamsville, MD? A whole lot less than to similar business owners in the Centre County, PA area.

Just semantics? The game was moved to FedEx Field because Redskin's ownership believed it could make money. If the objective was to get PSU another "home" game, then why didn't PSU simply pay Indiana $3mm to move the game to State College (and while your at it perhaps you can provide a list of MAC teams that got $3mm for one-and-done arrangements in 2010)?
