NIL Question regarding Injuries, etc

Building on the “Shapen out for the year” thread and speculation about his NIL deal, can someone who actually knows how this stuff works explain how a situation like this works.

Say we raise a bunch of money to pay some stud player who comes in and gets injured early in the season, do they still get all the money. Are there certain clauses involved with NIL deals? I laugh even calling them NIL anymore since it’s really just a salary and not what The NIL lawsuit was even about.

I had a few questions regarding the new NIL initiative, the bulldog club fundraising, etc for the nice donor rep who came around Jackson and meeting donors this past week, but didn’t think to ask about this.

It was nice to finally hear from anybody in this administration after it being radio silence over the past year with the only communication being that they were kicking me out of my parking spot this year and leaving me with the scrap selections. Apparently everyone I’ve ever dealt with in the past is gone. Not exactly laying a strong foundation to raise money so far.

My understanding is nil cannot be tied to performance but I'm sure there are "ways" to structure the contract. I would bet he's getting all his money and honestly he should, it's not like he's quitting, he's injured.

This is why athletes should become employees of the school; it would allow the players to receive benefits as any other state employee does. The way it is now “no play, no pay” makes more sense especially if nil is 100% private money.
If I get blasted for this, my apologies as I don’t fully understand the rules of nil. Just my thoughts on how i THINK it works.

Yeah, definitely wasn’t saying he shouldn’t but with revenue sharing coming at what point are they contracted employees who can/should have performance bonuses or minimum thresholds to meet. Just wondering since I’m one of those folks skeptical of giving money to NIL.

Like I told the BDC rep, every time they want to build something or upgrade facilities they ask us to pay for it. Then the BDC is supposed to be for “scholarships” for athletes and we pay for that. Now they want us to pay for the talent with NIL.

Told them I’m fine giving money to the school for athletics , but I’m not paying for both and what do I get for my “investment”. BDC gives points and priority for future seating/tickets. What does NIL give?

Yeah. You start not paying players who get injured & you’re not gonna be signing any more good players.
Bingo. I don’t see why it’s so much of a deal… especially since every other team is playing the same game. The Bulldog Club and ticket prices are the same if the team wins 2 games or 10 games as well. We demanding the ticket prices be cheaper next year?

Again. We can get on board or lose. Two choices. Two choices only.

Shhhhh!!!! Don’t say this out loud I got cussed out for having a similar opinion a few days back. You can not say anything negative about the BI or you do not support the team.

Get on board is exactly what the Ole Miss faithful have done and it's paid off big time for them. Think about where they were under Matt Luke and while Kiffin is a good coach, players aren't coming there simply to play for him.

Exactly. Our biggest rival 90 miles away is literally showing us the road map of what we need to do. And we’re too 17ing stupid to see it.

There are a number of clauses that can reduce or end compensation (quitting, removal from team, arrest, conduct on social media, etc.). Injuries do not (my personal view is that, in addition to being a problem with the legalities, it would be a death sentence to recruiting efforts), but there are some companies working through Lloyd's who offer the ability to insure larger NIL agreements against injuries, which can offer some help.

To another point somebody made, I don't think we are far away from these things being handled much more institutionally across the whole SEC.

We are all trying to get to the same place, and there are certainly some negative things for us to take into account. My only request would be that you give me a chance to talk with you about in person and maybe I could benefit from the input, and there could be some things I could share in person that I can't really put on an open forum. I'll buy lunch and would even come to you.

Thanks Charlie. I was hoping you’d respond. Honestly was just wondering how the whole process works.

That's the million dollar question. The problem is if you tie NIL money to ANY sort of participation, you will likely get the cold shoulder from the recruit because there is an Auburn, Oregon or Miami that will gladly give the recruit the same amount with zero stipulations.

As a donating fan (that isn't a whale), you CANNOT look at NIL as an investment. It's throwing the money into a black hole or taking it to the casino.

I guess thanks for the invite I will pass. I was not trying to get a lunch invite. I understand that you in particular can not talk about the negatives on a open forum. I was simply trying to point out that anyone with a negative opinion is called out for not being committed or really a fan as though everything is going or has gone perfectly. I do wish you all the luck in the world with something I am sure is not easy. Thank you for being gracious my meager BI giving is not enough to warrant that kind of meeting. I just want to be able to point out an issue when I see one without having to defend my fandom.

My season ticket price is going to go down next season if things don't change. It is going to zero as of now.

He won't do it. None of them will. They just want to ***** and complain and don't care a thing about helping to make Mississippi State more competitive in football and the other sports.

I cringe a little every time I hear the word "investment" tied to charitable donations. In this case, the only "return" you will ever see is on the scoreboard. Maybe.

I give regularly to the College of Engineering and the Chem E department. I'm "investing" in the education of future engineers, and my "return" should be a better future of some sort. But I sure as hell take my tax deduction every year.

Someone "invested" in 17 year old me and allowed me to attend MSU without paying tuition. I've paid that money back over 10 fold (keep in mind, this was 1980s tuition, so 10 x 4.5 years of tuition isn't even 6 figures). So maybe that's the return on investing in me?

Having a successful athletics program can help the school with alumni relations and recruiting new students, but I prefer to cut out the middle man.

100% agree. But if you ask Larry from Noxapater for $20/month, he will ask "What's in it for me?" He will look at it more from a (supposed) investment standpoint.

Someone with big money is going to understand exactly what you said. It's a donation and whatever happens, happens.

This is great. We need people giving to the school for academics, too. Thanks for your contributions.

Woah, there, reject the tyranny of "or". We can get on board AND lose. Those two "choices" are not directly related.
Well one is certain and one is not.

All I know is that we are done seeing a good product on the field until there is a buy in. There will be zero lack of complaining about it however.

This is the disadvantage we place on ourselves… among the others we already have.

And when we eventually have to make a coaching move, there will be multiple turndowns and eventually another unproven coordinator will have to be chosen because no up and coming coach will walk into a disadvantaged team competing with Vandy NIL.

I’m completely perplexed how one team in this state had people running to join in and become a part of NIL and the other team is filled with people with 10 million questions and complaints of having to pay players and “what if this?”, and “what if that?”, and the ole standby of “they get a scholarship!

It’s just the truth. It’s the world we now live in because of the courts. We can buy in and rebuild this team or we can absolutely suck while being a farm team for a few diamonds we get now and then. Those are the choices.

People can do what they wanna do… but I foresee a future lack of tolerance for people that gripe about NIL for 6 days and the team on the 7th.

Thanks, but I guess I always understood that as our obligation, particularly since I was on scholarship. The University gave us the means to make a good living, so you give a little back.

Every year they made us write a sort of "Thank You" letter to the family who set up the scholarship fund. Give them an update on how school was going and what our future plans were. I think those letters probably meant more to me than the donors, and instilled a real sense of gratitude.

It should be structured so that the BI stops paying players the minute they transfer or otherwise leave the team, but if a player gets injured and remains a part of the team, they should be paid as if they played the whole season.

I saw a buddy yesterday and while talking about some whiners in our group texts, I thought he said it well: "If you're enjoying this season so far, just don't contribute. That's the easiest thing to do, and the best way to help insure we stay right where we are."

I don't think they should be employees of the school. They should be employees of the NIL collectives. In fact.. as I'm sure some are tired of me posting.. the only way forward that I can see is that they are not students at all.

As long as federal education funds are tied to students who are also on scholarship as athletes, this circus will continue. The Supreme Court has ruled that the NCAA/SEC/God Himself cannot limit a person's ability to earn money simply because they accept an athletic scholarship.

The new revenue sharing plant won't put a stop to NIL. Sure it's going to raise all the boats by the height of that tide, but players will continue to receive NIL/Booster funds on top of their share.

Make them employees under contract of private entities.

We have to take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

Probably not a good idea to be known for incentive laden NIL. Especially when the big boys are dishing it out no strings. Other than character clauses, I mean.
