Why are sports commentators so poor at basic grammar?

They frequently drop the “ly” from proper adverbs and incorrectly use an adjective instead.

An example… some talking head exclaims “He played that one physical”

TD, McCaffrey for the Niners (on a run from the 3. After the PAT, it's 16-9, Niners, with 14:58 left in the game

Stupid Niners. They should have had Gould on the D line for the Cowboys’ 3rd and 1. Dallas converts.

Maher with a 43-yard FG for the Pokes, makes it 16-12, Niners, with 11:03 left in the game

Dallas D looks beat. I think this is over. Cowboys quit after the 49ers TD

Niners with a nice drive, but Pokes force them to kick a 28-yard FG. Gould converts, so it's 19-12, Niners, with 3:04 left in the game.

Less than two minutes until we have a coast-to-coast NFC title match-up! The City of Brotherly Love versus the City of Loving everyone and anytime. :)

Glad Olsen's not a coach. Him babbling on about not taking a TO was just dumb. Of course they shouldn't have taken it.

he talks too damn much for my ears. Good TV color analysts learn how to make a salient point with as few words as possible.

Pokes D stops the Niners, forcing them to pun with 51 sec left. Pokes with a FC at the 6, with 45 sec left in the game. They have to go 94 yards. Could be interesting

Final: 19-12, Niners.

They'll face the Eagles next Sunday in the NFC Championship game, in Philadelphia.

Saw this article during the game, never really paid attention to this “white collar” before. Dalton Schultz had one on during those two sideline plays . Might be restricting blood flow to the brain . 🙄

Wife asked me the same thing so I looked it up as well. Interesting deal.

Tom, do the birds beat SF?
Grant, what’s the line? (Your guess)

hard to know in advance who will win. The opening line is Birds at either -2 or -1.5 (I've seen both), so they're a slight favorite. I'm surprised the line isn't a little bit larger, but I'll defer to @Grant Green who has forgotten more about sports betting than I've ever known.

It should be a good game. Most folks felt the two best teams in the NFC were the Birds and the Niners. Some doubts crept in when Hurts was injured, and when Jimmy Garoppolo was injured, but each team has responded well to those situations, and each has an excellent defense as well.

And yet, so many people still refer to them as America’s team. 🤔

These teams are power rated pretty close, with the eagles probably 1/2 pt or so better after what we saw this weekend. Give the eagles 2 to 2.5 for HFA, and this line should be -2.5 to-3 imho.
I did make a bet at -2 because I think the eagles pass rush will finally make Purdy look more like a rookie. The line is now a juiced -2.5 at a number of shops.

Early money on the Birds. Will be interesting to see if it gets to-3 and stays there.

You kidding me. It does not matter which team wins, Eagles will treat them like they did the Giants!!
Uh, no. The Eagles are the NFC's third best team this season, behind the Niners and the Cowboys. And if Mahomes is good to go, the Chiefs may be the best team of all. He is unbelievable, and he is surrounded by talent.

Simply not true. At times, the niners were the better team, at times it was the eagles, and they were probably about equal at times. At no point did anyone who makes football odds for a living have the cowboys ranked higher than the eagles (except possibly the very beginning of the season and when hurts was out).

Grant: I was simply responding somewhat in kind to Sluggo's post, which suggested (somewhat comically, IMHO) that the Eagles are going to do to the Niners what they did to the Giants. I trust you would agree with me that there is a ginormous difference between the Niners and the Giants. The Eagles may possibly beat the Niners next weekend, but if I had to put money on it, I would bet on the Niners. The Niners and the Cowboys have the two best defenses in football this season. The Eagles are not far behind, and they have a very good OL. On offense, the Eagles' skill players (with the exception of QB) are not as good as the Niners' skill players. Hurts has been very good at QB this year, and he will present a real test for the Niners.

The debate here is interesting, and is part of what sports are about. We will see how it all works out next Sunday.

Agree the 9ers and giants are two different animals. But disagree that the eagles skill players aren’t as good as the 9ers, as a blanket statement. They use their WRs and RBs differently. As gadget players yes, the 9ers are better but as pure WR/RBs, there’s a very good argument to be made that Brown/Smith are better than Aiyuk/Samuel and Sanders is SLIGHTLY better than McCaffrey. TE is where the 9ers have a definitive advantage, but Goedert is no slouch.

Defensively though, the argument is all relative to which stat you want to use.
