It’s Philly. Didn’t Flyers fans punch out many of the Bruins players?

o_O
ummmm...didn't they deserve it? It's been fifty years but i still want to punch Phil Esposito. Just on sheer principle.

I've never really thought about reasons why fans storm the field/court. I know it's mainly because they're excited their team won. But really, what's the point of doing it?? There aren't any attendance prizes out there for the fans. Nobody is giving away vouchers to be used for next semester's tuition. You run onto the court. Then what?? Jump up and down for a minute. Scream incoherently for a bit. Then leave. The more I think about it, the more pointless it seems. After a big win it would be more fun having a beer at your favorite student bar.

They should put a plexiglass wall around the court. You never see them storm the ice in hockey. I do not watch hockey, but have never heard of it…
Its probably not the wall, but the ice. Fans don't want to be slipping and sliding and falling down there.

It wasn't that much of a collision. Heck, I think the ref should have called a foul on Filipowski for flopping. What is he, a Premiership player? And it's not like the kid was in the Stanford band and had a brass instrument with him.

During exuberant exercises of jubilation - very infrequent, mind you - Michigan State students would haul out several sofas into the nearest street and light them on fire. While doing dances around fire, campus security would attempt to arrest the students while putting out the fire - which would cause greater exercises of jubilation. Just strange !!

I have seen shirts that read, "West Virginia where greatness is earned and couches are burned."

Some years ago a WVU wrestler from the Uniontown area got a gold at the Olympics. His hometown had a ceremony on his return and the honor included the burning of a couch. I thought that was great.

Something needs to be done about it…I’m in favor of taking the soccer model of unruly fan behavior being penalized by the team having to play a future home game without fans. Force the school to take a significant $ hit making it important for them to police it, and also give fans a potential penalty for not staying in their seats.

Was the Duke player injured on purpose or was it an accident? If it was on purpose the fan should be charged with assault and battery. Plus the player could file a civil lawsuit.
If it becomes a continual problem then something will have to be done. Just what that is I don't know.

Hard to say. Fan who first collided with Filipowski was looking right at him and didn't make any attempt to avoid him.

Just watched this on YouTube. Let me say first off that I think it’s a stupid tradition, though a lot of fun for the fans. That said, Filipowski initiated contact, didn’t he?

Filipowski was leaving the court, the fan was running on it, and they collided. Nothing intentional from either of them, but it's what happens when you've got a big crowd rushing forward and a player not ready for it. Even beyond the obvious potential for injury, you've got fans in the close proximity of opposing players/coaches heckling and/or touching them...at some point, something serious will happen that will be a turning point in all of this.

Don’t give the Pitt marketing department any ideas with that voucher offer.

the game is over. whatever happens is the same as if it happened out on the street in the middle of the day.

Looked like Filipowski kind of threw a forearm at somebody running past him. I didn’t study it by any means, but that’s what I saw.

I'd say that "bracing himself for contact" is a lot better explanation than "threw a forearm".

I’ll have to look again. What I saw was that the person was not going to contact him. They were running past him and wouldn’t have touched him if he didn’t reach out.
Here is an overhead angle (and in the full speed one, you can appreciate how quickly everything happened as it was a blur)…

Can they force fans to act like they’ve been there before?

snowflaky news story imho

Of course we don't want athletes hurt by fans but how about some facility security help the opposing team off the court and its a non-story. But hey we need something to kibbitz about don't we. I think we should ban the fans for the last five minutes in March Madness - they can only watch on tv but get free lattes and are allowed polite clapping. ;) Will that work?

In the video recently posted he very clearly sticks his arms out and initiates contact with the fan. Then does a weird 'duck and spin' like he got smashed into; dude is 7' 250 lbs. Maybe just stand still for a second and have everyone run around you. This isn't hard.
