Given the history with UNC, that was a disrespectful separation. He was a top tier coach who ran out of gas, just as Darrell Royal ran out of gas, Lou Holtz ran out of gas, Frank Broyles ran out of gas, and Steve Spurrier ran out of gas. Even Bear Bryant ran out of gas. All those guys won national championships.
Brown ranks eighth all time among FBS coaches with 288 victories, and is the only coach with 100-plus wins at multiple FBS schools -113 at North Carolina and 158 at Texas. He wasn't the greatest, but he was certainly better than most.
The ESPN ticker said "fired." I was surprised it didn't say "resigned" or "retired." If, indeed, he was fired with one game left in the season (a season that could still yield 8 wins with a bowl), that does seem disrespectful to a legendary coach.Given the history with UNC, that was a disrespectful separation.
They were hoping he would take them off the hook, but he started counting the buyout money. I would too.He just said he was planning on coaching 2025 on Monday, so yes he was fired!
