I was a little surprised myself at the lack of a mention and decided to let it go....
I think the sad part in all of it was that Mack and the AD were clearly not on the same page. Best to pull Mack aside and inform him, informally, and then let him decide if he wants to "retire" or be "fired." - Really poor management, IMHO. Other than that, not really surprised. His age is definitely showing lately.

He was a top tier coach who ran out of gas, just as Darrell Royal ran out of gas, Lou Holtz ran out of gas, Frank Broyles ran out of gas, and Steve Spurrier ran out of gas. Even Bear Bryant ran out of gas. All those guys won national championships.
Brown ranks eighth all time among FBS coaches with 288 victories, and is the only coach with 100-plus wins at multiple FBS schools -113 at North Carolina and 158 at Texas. He wasn't the greatest, but he was certainly better than most.

Given the history with UNC, that was a disrespectful separation.
The ESPN ticker said "fired." I was surprised it didn't say "resigned" or "retired." If, indeed, he was fired with one game left in the season (a season that could still yield 8 wins with a bowl), that does seem disrespectful to a legendary coach.
Unless he said there was no way he would tender his resignation. But if that was the case, why stick around to coach the last game?
He just said he was planning on coaching 2025 on Monday, so yes he was fired!
They were hoping he would take them off the hook, but he started counting the buyout money. I would too.
I was looking at Brown's coaching record on Wikipedia. In his first stint at UNC, he went 1-10 and 1-10 in his first two years, 1988 and 1989. The 1989 season ended with the Tarheels suffering a 41-0 beat-down at home by rival Duke (then coached by Steve Spurrier). My, how times have changed at P5 football programs. I don't think a coach with that record in his first two years would still be around to coach a third season nowadays.
