People underestimate the value of possessing the ball. Keeping the ball in that spot rather than giving it to them in plus territory is a lot to gain.
To not give it to them in plus territory, you've still gotta go get another first down. And failing gives them the ball in the red zone.

I would argue the risk/reward equation on that specific play was heavily not in our favor.

I’ve been telling you guys for 2 years. It’s going to be the B1G and SEC in a NFL style playoff ultimately. Everyone else is getting ghosted at some point.
I agree with you, but the way the announcers made it sound last night, the BigTen isn't worthy.:ROFLMAO: To quote Al Davis, "Just win baby!"

Franklin went on 4th and 1 from his own 30 against Kentucky in a bowl game. It failed and Kentucky went on to win.
Paterno also went for it deep in his own territory in a bowl game against Florida State in1967. That one failed, too. The Seminoles scored and the game ended in a tie.

I think it depends on the situation. If PSU was losing 17-0 and the offense was doing nothing it might make sense to go for it because you have to turn the momentum.

But when you're up 14-0 why risk it? That could have easily been 14-7 with SMU regaining momentum.

As far as I'm concerned that was a bad call even if we made it.

Jennings needs to consult Jameis Winston as his spiritual advisor so that God can deliver Jennings from "The Pick Sixes," like he did for Jameis.

The way we were punting the ball (and our success with the tush push), I was also in favor of going for it
From your own 19? Up 14-0 at home against a big underdog? And the PSU D was solid so far. No reason to fear making them drive 70 yards for a score.

I’m thrilled with the win, but there was only downside to that call. They gave SMU an easy chance to get back in the game early. It was situationally stupid.

If I’m assuming we’d hit a 51 yard punt into that wind, I’d feel differently…more likely would be them needing to go 45 yards. There is obviously a downside to giving them the ball back.

I was interested to hear during game that Drew idolizes or compares himself to Josh Allen. I'm hoping he can attain that level of play and athleticism! Let's go Bill's!!!

Overall thoughts on today’s win:
Happy for the decisive W, but concerned it was a bad look for college football. I hope the committee doesn’t go back to letting fewer teams in, or not letting Cinderella into the dance. Or worse - the SEC and B1G pushing for a bigger guaranteed share of spots or breaking away entirely.
You can count on the B1G and the SEC dictating more, with an assist from the network folks.

I can remember more than a few blowouts when the CFP only invited four teams. This is nothing new.

My only changes would be bracket them 1-12. Not sure I need to see the top 4 beat up on 13-16 seeds but I’m cool with the big boys getting a home game Its an awesome reward for the home fans and $$ for all
