They could have picked Pickett at 52nd dear lord.
Apparently they tried to trade up to 15 to the Texans to get him. Talk about completely misreading his standing.

I have mixed feelings on the pick; I do think Pickett is likely the safest QB in the draft, but as noted, he's older, might have peaked, etc. Still, he's been extremely productive, can move if need be, and has been pretty successful. He's improved each year too. That said, I do think in a draft with no sure fire 'can't misses', maybe take a swing at Willis since I think his ceiling is higher and probably out of his reach (though maybe a lower floor than Pickett). Consider these two stat lines and tell me what you think....
4,486 yards, 37 TD, 10 INT
4,319 yards, 42 TD, 7 INT
Those are Roethlisberger's best year (top) compared to Pickett's (bottom). With Trubisky, the Steelers can bring KP along a little slower, but probably could have moved a bit to get him a bit later. We'll see, but interesting pick.
I'm just not that concerned with stats, because college systems can produce those. My main concern with Pickett is the measurables that he cannot fix. His arm is below average in strength, that doesn't generally change much. His fumbling hands are small, he can't grow them. Because he can't change those things, there will always be a ceiling. When I watched Ben in a game against Bowling Green his junior year, I knew in the 1st quarter I wanted the Steelers to get him. I never watched Pickett and thought that.
Good point. I just wish they didn't take that "chance" with their very first pick.Sure, but Drew Brees couldn’t grow taller, Mike Vick had small hands, etc. I guess my point is if you’re gonna take a chance, Pickett is pretty safe.
Pickett wasn’t half as good as Bree’s or Vick in college.Sure, but Drew Brees couldn’t grow taller, Mike Vick had small hands, etc. I guess my point is if you’re gonna take a chance, Pickett is pretty safe.
That's not how it works. Just because no one took a QB before the Steelers second pick doesn't mean they wouldn't have drafted Pickett before the Steelers. They may have had an early second round grade on him. I'm not thrilled with the pick either but what you've been saying isn't necessarily true. There were several defensive players available that they could have used, and still got Pickett if they wanted later on.
Tomlin said they were surprised when Pickett was still available and it was not even close as to picking anyone else I like the pick. I am not a Pitt fan by any means, despise them but I think he can play well. Time will tell. Everybody in sports has been writing off the Steelers for next season. Not so fast my friends. I can guarantee you the AFC North will not be won by Cleveland or the freakin Ravens though. Neither of their QB’s have a history of winning the big one when they have needed to. One or both will be injured during the season for several weeks or more. My biggest concern that could sink us this season is Canada.I wasn't overly enthused with Roethlisberger when we picked him. I remembered Iowa picking him off 4 times in the opener that year. He turned out to be a Hall of Famer. I'm not suggesting Pickett is that good, but let's see him in black and gold before writing him off entirely. Based on some reaction videos the Pitt fans who are also Steelers fans are pretty pumped. The Penn State fans who are Steelers fans, not so much. I think if it was close among the QBs available the Steelers were going with the Pitt guy since they missed the boat with Marino.
