On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you fell about signing Dylan Favre?

I'm not overly impressed w/ the commit but really what do you guys have to lose? Were you going to sign a QB this year regardless?...apparently so. If he starts to look good as a QB the next year or two then you've gotten a guy who surpassed expectations and you're happy. If he's not happy and not playing, he'll transfer to a lower level school opening up the scholly again and he likely stays in school wherever he ends up and doesn't hurt your APR. No big time QBs are going to shy away from MSU b/c he's there, either, b/c he's not heralded and then there's this:

The kid looks like he could probably be a pretty good safety. He's not slow, he's not particularly light, and he seems to have good football smarts. He might not be the highest rated safety prospect out there but unlike a lot of QB recuits he actually looks like he could play another position. If none of the other scenarios work out this one isn't very far-fetched.

I think the negative replies center mostly on disappointment about Newton and the realization that this commit likely means the Brunetti efforts aren't bearing fruit. It's not dislike of Favre but disappointment that nobody really heralded apperars to be coming...at QB I mean.

You hit the nail on the head with that one and it is understandable that our fans are not happy with losing Cam. I got over that quickly. I also have some coaching experience myself from mostly a developmental level which is nowhere near the college game, but I have seen players that have really surpassed expectations either in their first cast position or by moving them into another position. I don't know that Dylan will surprise or not but I am at least ready to give him the benefit of the doubt based on his performance at the high school class 4A level.

He did well this week behind a tall line and played well against a group of D-I college level players in the AA game. I think he will eventually start for us and do very well. Maybe better than any QB we've ever had. I am simply stunned that he did not get more attention from D-I schools, but I think this turns out to be a brilliant move by Mullen. And all because a malcontent JUCO transfer prima donna chose Auburn over us.

..but if Mullen treats Favre like Lee & doesn't coach him to overcome his height disadvantage by pump faking his passes, then a 3.

(and that doesn't necessarily mean that Favre will or won't) but with Flutie you are talking about a guy that tore it up in the CFL and USFL and then when given a chance to play in the NFL started for I believe 2 different teams with pretty decent success. Any guy that could win an NFL starting job in the 90s could certainly still be a top notch college QB even today. People haven't gotten THAT much bigger in 10 years.

his parents weren't married when he was born and he took his mothers name and later when he and his father reconnected he took Favre as his last name. If I have a detail screwed up please let me know but I know for a fact he is blood related to Brett and the rest of em'.

An any body is better than a no body.

And this is obviously where he wants to be. He did have other offers and Mississippi Southern and Tulane have had as good or better QB's than MSU in recent, or hell, even old history.

I'm okay with this guy knowing he's going to be a backup. A backup with those kind of stats is a successful get in my opinion - even if he's on the short side.

I hope I eat crow one day, but I think alot of you folks are getting blinded by the Favre name. Don't expect this guy to Brett 2.0.

I don't expect him to ever be the quarterback, but if Russell plays for four years, as looks likely, Favre would only have one year at the most. By that point, we'll have probably recruited someone else to be the quarterback. He looks good enough to be a back-up for a few years and if he turns out to be great then we only benefit. At least we should keep him away from USM. They probably really wanted him and now we don't have to play against him in 2014.

Considering the fact that we weren't getting anyone better, I don't see any downside to Favre's signing. And there is even a potential upside.

I think signing him is important because of Mullen's push to offer, sign, and play the best players from the State of Mississippi.

Its also good to have the Favre name on our team for national media pub.
