had a serious tour of several major collegiate opportunities for his really smart daughter. She chose Clemson for several reasons. But the most notable reason was the fact that she wanted to experience being a winner at the football level as opposed to being a wannabe. No joke, that is how it came down. Once again, Ray and the BOT, just don't get it. What a bunch of losers. My best friend is just crushed.

I'm going to advisedly assume that you are being serious. UPC has seen its best days. A "really smart' daughter would be looking at Georgia, Bama, or Ohio State.

You know what they say about the word assume. I normally like you post, but in this case, you assumed wrong. She is smart, and we offered the Honor College, but she chose Clemon on the basis of a spirited fan base. Sorry pal.

So, you weren't being serious. If you read what I wrote, I said I assumed you were being serious. There are degrees and types of "smartness". Choosing any school on that basis does not bespeak basic (not to be confused with academic) intelligence. Choosing UPC on that basis at this particular time as opposed to certain other schools does not bespeak it, either.

I have to agree. Our honors colleges' prestige after graduation trumps a "spirited fan base" for anyone with half a brain. And for the record, our football program's trajectory is better than CU's

Do you know what a trajectory is?

17 & 18 year olds make decisions on some random motives. The strongest odds are
She did it for spite or protest because she could.
Or friends are heading to Pickens

Your friends daughter is a childish idiot if she chose a school for that reason…. I mean literally

I personally believe you are full of it. You don’t have friends, and those made up friends don’t have daughters. Sorry bud

Good for her if that is where her interests lay My eldest daughter chose Davidson for the education. My youngest chose Miam (OH) University for similar reasons and to play golf. Neither seemed to care how good the football team was or whether they even had one.

It has been shown that there are an uptick in applications to a school after they win in football. (Probably at a school that is not a perineal winner).

I would say that the uptick strictly for that reason mainly involves the less than elite student. Alabama enjoyed an uptick awhile back, but they had been good at football for a long time when the uptick occurred. The report I saw was highlighting scholarships being awarded to extremely gifted students to attend their version of the Honors College. Alabama had put out lots of material to guidance counselors all over the United States. Students from around the country were being enrolled in the program. That was the uptick as it related to very academically motivated students.

Imagine if you will, choosing a school for your future endeavors/career path based on their football team’s success. Like a Twilight Zone Episode. I’ll call BS, and if not, your friend’s daughter isn’t the brightest light in the tool shed. Hope she likes winter boredom and doldrums. The Esso Club is only fun so many times. Tiger Town Tavern as well. Good lawd the stupidity...maybe she can join the cement canoe rowing team for fun. Play cow patty bingo, perhaps? Lots of options lmao

A really smart daughter would not factor football - or any sport for that matter into consideration.

I can see a smart student pursuing a school like Sewanee. They left the SEC way back in 1940 when they (encouraged by a new incoming president) realized that they had a different perspective on varsity sports from the other 12 league members. Some of this could be attributed to their never having won a league game in football while in the SEC. Today, they are DIII and also have a thriving intramural program.

Davidson does have a football team; go Wildcats! Non-football competes in the A10. Football competes in the FCS Pioneer League. What makes Pioneer unique is that league members do not offer athletic scholarships for football.

But it sounds like your daughters have their priorities in the right order.

Back in the day when my father was looking at Dental Schools to attend (remember, SC did not have a dental school until the early 1960s), it boiled down to University of Maryland, and Atlanta Southern (later acquired by Emory, and closed by Emory several decades after acquisition). He chose Atlanta Southern because that's where most of his friends were going.

All things being equal, then yes, let the extracurriculars help make the decision.

Familiar with the Pioneer League as UD joined just prior to my internship in their athletic department. Cushy job for a law student.

1) Those schools are out of state.

2) Aalabama has drastically increased its academics because students from all over the country want to be associated with a winner.

3) No one cares about the honor college. I turned it down.

DC would equal Davidson College. Davidson has no graduate programs. While certainly they want faculty to research and publish, they want faculty to primarily teach. I'm sure CockofEarle would agree.
Agree. Davidson is an excellent school....was very impressed when I went on the college tours with my daughter. She fell in love with it and enjoyed every moment she was there. My only problem was that I wanted her to major in Accounting and they don't have that major....she didn't and majored in Psychology with a minor in Socialogy and is looking for a grad school for school psychology (obviously her mom has more influence than I).

Got a link? Is it only honors for humanities or does it include engineering? Is an honors graduate from USC in engineering more valuable than a MIT grad with same grades? I’m not sure how this is judged. Thanks

My neighbor's daughter majored in Biomedical Engineering while in the Honor's College. She had offers from Stanford, Berkeley and Yale...among others. The Honor's College has a sterling reputation.

Well from personal experience my daughter is graduating with Degree in Biochem and has been accepted to Yale, uVA among others for grad school
Now is it better than MIT ? Not saying that but then who is? I think there are plenty of rankings as to quality of USC Honors college and it’s students

Neither one of my kids chose USC where I graduated with 2 BS degrees in the 90s. My son went to Winthrop and my daughter went to College of Charleston. They never cared about the Gamecocks like I did. No harm no foul. GO COCKS

I remember a football recruit chose UNC because of it's baby blue colors...I thought to myself, what a weird way to choose a school.

I chose Carolina over Clemson because I had grown up in the upstate and felt like it would be better to get away from home and the business school was better.

At that time, it was the School of Business...Darla Moore had not given the bucks yet to name the Business School after her...

You should never pick a college to attend based on the strength of the football team...unless you're a football player, which I'm going to guess that she isn't.

Even an athlete - football or otherwise - needs to consider other aspects of the school in addition to the coach, the team, etc. True, athletics will hold a high priority in their decision.
