So the firsthand accounts being reported are lies? Elon Musk was lying when he said they (FEMA) stopped his team from distributing starlinks and delivering supplies with his helicopter? Tim Kennedy is lying when he said FEMA stopped his team from doing search and rescue? The multiple helicopter pilots that, on TV, are saying FEMA has stopped them from continuing their rescue flights and threatened them with arrest?

I find it interesting that you choose to believe this gov’t over private citizens. Also, that you believe these people who are in desperate need of help lie when they say how FEMA has done nothing but create bigger problems.
I think it’s more about maintaining a level of organization. FEMA knows how to do this - people are trying to ramrod things from outside and it causes chaos.

I could be wrong though, and it’s a massive conspiracy, all put together by the government in a few days time, at the same time they were responding to a disaster.

We also have an election to fuel that political fire - in a swing state no less.

FEMA knows how to do this? Ok And Mayorkas knows border security too, right? 8 billion more headed to Ukraine and nothing for the Americans who need it. Unbelievable how dense some of you are

If me doubting the validity of FEMA launching a huge conspiracy campaign in the face of a few days, while responding to a disaster, in order to intentionally 17 over some US citizens in a swing state for the election...........if doubting all that makes me retarded, then yessir, call me Carl Childers.

Is there actual evidence of FEMA doing that? I see all these people talking about it but no actual evidence. I’m just kinda skeptical when it’s just something thrown out there on social media.

Not saying FEMA is infallible because they certainly aren’t.

I have seen video of some fire chiefs or emergency management people getting on their high horse with all this.
Devil is always in the details but for me I see people far away from the devastation trying to benefit politically form a real ****** situation and officials closer to the assistance efforts telling these people to STFU as they are misrepresenting (aka lying) about reality and doing more harm than good.

I’ve been following these chopper guys and all I saw was the incident with the local emergency management guy who told some chopper pilot not to fly or he would be arrested which is atypical Barney Fife super cop behavior. Other than that all I’ve seen is people that are nowhere near NC saying that help is being turned away, supplies confiscated etc. I was simply asking if there was actual video footage or direct witness of FEMA doing what they’re supposedly doing.

My wife and kid and I drove up to Boone on Friday and volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse. I went back alone yesterday. We worked near Newland in a neighborhood on the Linville River on Saturday.
Yesterday I worked in Swananoa, near Aville.
If you are familiar with the area, the valleys along I-40 from Old Fort to Asheville are in bad shape, Old Fort, Black Mtn, Swananoa.

Yesterday I was assigned to a team working a neighborhood of nice patio homes, that seemed be owned by mostly retirees. Our team, were the first to get into “#43“. The amount of mud was mind boggling. The photo here was after some was removed. One of the first things I found was a small picture frame. I wiped it off and revealed that it was an old photo of a young girl sleeping. I wasn’t able to hand it directly to the home owner, but was glad i was able to mostly save it.

As we started taking out all the furniture, i noticed a girl flipping a medium size tire over and start rolling it out of the living room…i guess it just floated into the living room. I concentrated on what i believe was a guest bedroom/Home office. The bed in there had floated into the doorway making it difficult to get in. Instinctively, I didn’t want to step on the bed with muddy boots, but came back to my senses. The mud in that room had different consistency…like chocolate pudding. And getting the soaked mattress out was a chore. All the while stepping on unknown objects on the mud covered floor.
Amazing how much 20+ people can get done in a short time.

I will say, doing this sad work was very gratifying. Interacting with various home owners and just talking with them. One lady in particular, who’s home was much further along in the cleanup, and who I’m pretty certain isn‘t the religious type and maybe not a believer at all, spoke eloquently to myself and another lady for 15 minutes about how grateful she was.

I plan on trying to go back next Saturday if possible. This isn’t going to get fixed anytime soon. And no government agency, no matter how buttoned up, can accomplish what focused citizens can. I met fellow volunteers from NJ, OH, FL, KY, etc…

Thank you.

We milled and bagged 400 lbs of rice yesterday and it’s on a truck heading to East TN.

Of course if it's on Facebook, it must be true. **********
I’ll never forget how many reasonably intelligent baby boomers fell for that picture of the planes underwater in Houston after the Harvey flooding in 2017.

And I’m not talking Facebook comments. I’m talking about real people showing me their phones and saying “hey did you see this, that’s uNrEaL!!!” I’m like yeah must have been a billion year storm. Where’s Noah?

Not sure what people expect from FEMA for support on the ground, monetary support, sure. Maybe some interment camps shelters. But actual cleanup takes a lot of man power. SP has had their largest volunteer response ever. And so many other people volunteering/organizing. It was really encouraging to see A LOT of young people yesterday, working their asses off. Including the gals.
Don’t count on the gvt. Count On the people.

So this may be a stupid question, but did all these people know what was coming?

Are these places identified as flood zones and do the people that own those buildings basically know it's only a matter of time, like somebody only 12ft above sea level on the gulf or east coast knows (or should know) it's only a matter of time, even if it may be several decades, before they get flooded? Or do they have no clue that they have flood risk?

And even if they aren't aware before the hurricane is coming, once the rain is predicted, can they more or less predict where is going to get the flooding like in coastal areas so you can relocate ahead of time? Or do they just know they'll be flooding because of the rain but not know necessarily what areas will be flooded because there is a lot of elevation change and which low areas get a lot of runoff is not entirely predictable?
It was somewhere between a 100,000 and a 1,000,000 year rain event. The 3 day 1,000 year storm for Ashville is 12.4 inches of rain. THe area got between 20-33" of rain in 3 days after getting rain the previous week. A year's worth of rain in less than 3 days.

They were told it would be a 1,000 year rain event. It was 2x to 3x that.

There is no way to " prepare" for a rain event that statistically predated humans.

The flooding was 10-15 feet above the highest flood zone map.

To use your comparison, this is the equivalent of Picayune getting hit with 3 ft of storm surge from the gulf.

This is unprecedented. Its a geologic time event. Some of the buildings washed away were 25-30 feet above the creeks, and 15-20 feet higher than anyone had ever seen water in this area.

An equivalent rain event in Starkville would be 40-50".

The 1979 easter flood https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Easter_flood was 15-20 inches in the northeastern areas in Winston, Oktibbeha, Lowndes and Noxubee counties.

A lot of lives could have been saved had the US government lifted a finger to help. Instead, they chose to stop people and organizations from helping. FEMA confiscating donations and supplies because they are not provided by “preferred vendors “, shutting down landfills so debris can’t be removed , threatening private helicopter pilots with arrest, stopping private drone searches , stealing pallets of chainsaws so they can’t be provided to citizens, etc….. This is not incompetence. This is evil. But, we have billions for Ukraine, 170+ million for Lebanon, 640+ million the 17ing illegals and nothing for tax paying Americans.
none of this is true.

This is what is so 17ed up yet we barely hear anything about it. Hell, I’m not sure I’ve even seen it mentioned here that much if at all. But it’s all fine! Joy and whatever.
hard to "Report" on stuff when you have to walk in and out and don't have internet.

This explanation is very simple and when you think about it, it’s terrifying to think the momentum of the water coming down the mountain.

Absolutely wild that they had a multi generational event immediately stacked directly on top of another multi generational event. Nobody builds out infrastructure to withstand those odds. If you did you would be labeled insane.

The situation is starting to remind me a lot of Katrina. The only thing missing is somebody goes on TV and says that the President doesn't like hillbillies.
Honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet. 1 month to election time and devastation is centered in 2 swing states. The mud slinging is going to get even more intense over the next few weeks.

I lived through a 33" rain event with Harvey Had the press and federal government support stay at my house during it as I was dry. I cannot fathom how much worse it would be to have all that water flowing 1,000's of feet down too.

That’s the problem, the 20-30 inch totals were upstream of areas that got pretty high levels themselves.

If Asheville had gotten that amount (ie reversed) it would be bad but maybe not totally catastrophic. I remember the Atlanta area got 24” back in 2009 during a tropical storm, and it flooded, but didn’t have a massive wall of water that just showed up expectedly, sweeping folks away before they even knew what happened.

I remember going to Gatlinburg and wondering what would happen if they got huge amounts of rain with all the cabins being built on slopes with, uhh, well, ‘shaky’ building practices at best. Now we know.

Mountains are just tricky. Hard to get in and out of. Floods, fire (speaking of Gatlinburg), anything. Really nice areas in theory, but this stuff is scary.

Exactly. getting 20-30 inches of rain that fast, washes everything away.

It's how fossils are made. Things being buried under 20 ft of sand and rock in minutes.

It's a geologic time event.

I’ve seen 20 inches of rain in an area in the Delta on flat land and it’s awful. Make that water go down 4,000 feet of elevation drop….cataclysmic.

I assume they will exceed the Harvey funding. $2.3 billion

This is worse.

Congress has to approve the extra funds, and I hope they do before the election.
